I found this growing on the backside of a zoo rock that I purchased at a LFS. I've had the rock for about two months,
and it started growing about a month ago. I see another one starting on the top of the rock.

I don't have an ID for you on that critter. I have one in my tank as well, so I'll tag along. =)

It closes when I touch it. Some kind of clam or filter feeder it seems.

I'm pretty sure that's not a scallop, although a broadside view of it would have been helpful. If it's a scallop, the shell shape should be almost round. It looks pretty elongated? It may be a gerontic Pteria species, maybe Pteria penguin with the wing mostly gone, but most of those are somewhat inflated, and yours looks pretty thin. It also might be one of the species of hammer oysters or tree oysters, hard to tell with a single view.
Cheers,
Don

as scallops go in thickness vs clams i'd say from that picture it's a scallop....however i notice from most on here scallops vs clams/oysters have issues surviving for most of us....how old is this thing? oh wait i see about 2 months old in growing....well could be some good beginning growth or some some growth that will die off much like many sponges and aneomoes that hitchike to tanks....
