 I saw this skimmer at www.aquatraders.com its called the Odyssea pro pack skimmer dual or single and the price its going for is like $59 bucks. i wanted to know if anybody uses it or if they have heard anything about it. I was thinking of buying the aqua-c remora but my budget is kinda tight. I know that you get what you pay for but if this odyssea skimmer is any good I might think about buying it.

Try to link directly to the page with the skimmer.

buy a mj1200 powerhead and venturi kit, then connect to skimmer and POOF...you have a backpak.

I have a bakpack2 and have got it to work quite well, with the MJ1200 venturi mod, and some adjustments. The only thing negative I can say is that the collection chamber is kinda small so it is not good for a tank over a 40-50 gallon. I suppose you could drill a hole and have a drainage system.

The Venturi kit is actually a mod of the components that come with a MJ1200. I used one of the long barrel shaped strainers over the intake, and cut out a notch in it. Then I put the plastic piece that the venturi tube goes into (call this the Venturi adaptor), inside that notched strainer. The little porthole in the Venturi adaptor (that the venturi tube goes in) sticks out of the notch I cut in the barrel strainer. Popped this creation onto the inlet port of the MJ, and now it allows me to adjust the air coming into the inlet port, while it mixes with strained water (so no fish get stuck in it). I get a ton of bubbles in my skimmer, in fact I have to tone it down with the adjustment knob on the end of the Venturi tube.

Kodyboy do you use the typhoon skimmer? I just saw it seems good but i want to see more reviews on it.

I don't see anything wrong with the dual odyssea skimmer. Price is right, the dual one comes with the pumps for under $60. Looks like a backpack clone which is a decent skimmer from what I've read. I'd say go for it.

If you'd mod the pumps with either fishing line mod, or a meshwheel mod, I'll bet it would perform even better.

And let me say, while i've never had an odyssea skimmer, I have had a fair number of their products. I've have 4 of their 54W T5HO lights which all worked flawlessly from day 1. I have their 760W MH fixture which I really like, and I have the CFS4 canister filter which is great.

IMO, they build pretty good products for the price.

The D&D typhoon works well, I really like the build quality and and impressed with its skimming ability. For $68 it is a great buy.

thanks miatawnt2b and kodyboy all the info is great. mia you say you have the t-5 lights right? Do those come with individual reflectors for each bulb? Kodyboy iam really likeing the typoon skimmer and you say that it does a good job skimming but what size tank do you have? Also how long have you had it?

My t5's don't have individual reflectors. That said, I had no trouble with intensity, and was able to grow SPS at the middle to top of my 90 with 6 bulbs.

i saw your other thread here on the metal halide light. I guess it has 2-4bulbs that look like t-5 and two bulbs in the middle is that correct? Also keep me informed on how this light works out for you cause it seems like aquatraders are are selling good products at an affordable prices.

Crazy, i would suggest the typhoon as codyboy raves about it every five seconds : ) so i would like to see a second opinion but i would say the ps160 at aquatraders would be better than the backpack knockoff.

luke,
Be real I only rave about it every 6-7 seconds not five:)

My other thread is a new fixture. It's a 2x250W HQI with 4x 55W PC actinics. This is the fixture that I replaced my T5's with. The only reason I scrapped the T5's and went with halides was that I wanted the halide shimmer. I had great luck with my t5's, but no shimmer.

And PM away :)
