If I have a 40breeder and use Coralife's 150 watt HQI pendant about a foot above the open water, would it overheat the tank?

No I don't think so, I run 2 150W over a 65G tank without issues.
But it all depends on ambient temperature and if your using a fan or not.

You should not have a problem with overheating at a foot off the water. I have a Sunpod 2x150 HQI about 5 inches above the water(open tank) and I get a 2-3 degree increase over 7-8 hours.

As far as I know the pendants do not have a fan.

At a foot above open water, there is no way you should have heat problems. If you do, try to encourage more evaporation or think about lowering the room temperature.

I have the orbit fixture that has 192 Power Compaq bulbs, plus a 150 HQI... I noticed no temp increase at all when I added this fixture.
I have a 40breeder, and I keep temp around 79, I can keep much lower if i want.

I have a 40 breeder with a coralife 36" 150 hqi fixture, i get a couple degree raise in temp, but nothing to much....it is also on legs and about 4" away......IO am upgrading to a 250 14k with lumenarc reflector.
Corals looked good under the 150, but didnt have the BAM effect i wanted....
