I plan on using my mag 12 to run a closed loop to power my 1" seaswirl. If I run it on a closed loop can the mag 12 pump be run externally (out of sump)?
Thanks

I have heard of Mag pumps leaking if ran externally.

So then is it just the water pressure around the pump if it sits in the sump that makes it necessary for them to run under water even if on a closed loop?

I dont like magdrive pumps.

#1 reason is they create WAY too much heat.

They are not external pumps so I would think it would overheat.

Well I got it working, running internally in the sump.
Next question, I have it hooked up via flexible tubing connected by hose barbs. Whats the best way to seal the hose barb connections? Should I use teflon tape and silicone on them also, and should I clamp them after they are installed?
Thanks

I totally agree with Xenon on the heat issue, these are very hot pumps, but if you can handle that, nice for the money.

They are safe for external applications, many many folks use them externally to power reactors, closed loops, ect... one problem I have heard of is that they need to be primed, so I'm not sure how it would do in an outage, depends on how it is set up.

Not sure on your connection issue, I have always just use plumbers tape.

if you used flex tubbing just use a couple hose clamps to tighten it down
