View Full Version : Group Buy DI Color Changing Resin
funman1
02/19/2007, 12:17 AM
Ok here we go,
This group buy is for DI Color changing resin for your RO/DI systems.
I'm told by AWI that my Typhoon III take about 1lb to refill the cartridge. (Your mileage may vary)
Best price I could find for color changing was AWI.
So here's the deal.
We need to hit at least 40 lbs (or 80 or 120 for that matter).
Cost from AWI
$275.00 = 1 cubic foot of resin (40 lbs)
and $40.00 shipping to my house.
So total cost gross = $315
gross cost per LB 315/40lbs = $7.88 per LB
I will round up cost to $8.25 per LB, to cover Ziploc bags, PayPal fees, time spent, headaches, etc..
The paypal account I have is tied to my business (http://www.jbflops.com) (Bovine Communications and Marketing)
So it will say you've made a payment to Business:Bovine Communications and Marketing
I've made a Paypal button below to use.
This will make this VERY easy to pay for your order.
It will even ask you questions like "How do you plan to pick this up?",
and PLEASE fill out the RC Handle line so I know who to contact on here with your order details.
RULES (PLEASE READ, and don't buy if you can't follow them or you disagree with them!!!)
Once Payment is received I will post here the amount of your order, so we all know how much is left on the order.
Closing day, Last order must be received no later than (March 8th 2007)
If we have an even amount (40, 80, or 120 lbs) and the orders slow or stop before the close date, I may push this closing date up and close the GB early.
IF I decide to close the GB early as described above, I will email all current order holders, AND post on this thread, 3 days in advance of an early close date.
You may back out on your order for a full refund UNTIL the order is placed (March 9th 2007)
UNLESS the GB is closed early as described above, in which case the last cancellation date will be whatever the order date is.
If you do not arange pick up / delivery, before (April 9th 2007) 1 month after the purchase, I will consider your order abandoned and will either resell it or give it away to other club members, and YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE A REFUND OF ANY KIND FOR ANY REASON.
I don't want to sit on this stuff forever waiting for you. You want it, you paid for it; so make sure you don't go AWOL on me.
I will make every effort to acomodate pick ups at LFSs (CRS and YR)
Exotic and downtown stores, etc. are not local enough for me, and if I must meet you at these places, there will be a charge for gas to drive all the way out there for you.
I must have payment to secure your order. Checks and cash are fine, but you must get them to me somehow.
Paypal is the best, but if you don't want to use this method the other payments are ok.
I don't want the rules to scare anybody off, I just want this to go smooth and painless for all of us. I think these rules will help this move very well.

Good deal. I am in for 10 lbs to kick it off in the right direction.
Thanks for the rules up front and for putting this together, makes it much easier!
BTW - this stuff does not go 'bad' does it?
funman1
02/19/2007, 09:42 AM
As far as I know it does not go bad, as long as it stays sealed.
Confirmed MrMikeB 10 lbs
23 lbs left on the first bag.

Give me 10lbs that I will pick up at the next MARS meeting. I n additoin to what Steve has mentioned, the DI resin does have to be kept in a cool dry place. So don't leave them in your garage during the hot months.
Steve - are these the mixed DI resin (both cations and anions)? Did you check with AWI to see what type of resin we need?
Minh
funman1
02/19/2007, 01:33 PM
Yes this is mixed Resin
Since RC won't allow the vendor website to be posted here is the quote from the vender...
" This is mixed bed and color changing resin. Both cation and anion resins are combined in ths one bag.
Color changing resin available, color changes as resin is used up."

Thanks for being up-front about costs and what-not. Heck, if you're organizing and it's still cheaper, you deserve the extra!
Thanks for disclosing.
My wife was hysterical after last MARS meeting when I dumped 1lb of acid and picked up 30lb of rock. She figgered I was either an alchemist or the drug king-pin of Nor-Cal...
I'm in for 5lb of resin...

i would be interested in buying some resin if its possible to store them for long period of time.

By-the-way... I'm only finding info that these types of resins are 'color changing'... Assumption is that when the resin has adsorbed to it's limit it magically changes color to let you know? Right? If so, from what color to what color? Thanks.
funman1
02/25/2007, 07:11 PM
Yes color changing means that when the resin is exhausted it changes color.
The stuff we are getting is from Dark Blue/Black to Light Brown/Tan when it's done.

If you get the 2nd bag down under 5lbs left, we will take it. I am just not sure that we would be able to use more than that. Our TDS is around 1 - 2 ppm coming from the RO unit.. so the DI doesn't have a whole lot of work to do :)
funman1
03/08/2007, 10:31 PM
ahh..
That's for sure..
If you don't need the extra don't feel obligated.
It's not like I'm trying to get rid of it, If I have extra, it will be sold off.
Is that why there's almost no respsonses from BAR?
(You guys have great water)
:)
Sparkss
03/09/2007, 12:43 AM
some do and some don't. I can't really speak to the other members. We are located pretty much between the majority of BAR and you all up in MARS :).
For any BAR members, I can pickup and deliver your resin if you wanted to order some (although with the cheap shipping that was offerred, that shouldn't even really be needed).

Sparkss
03/09/2007, 11:17 AM
I think he meant is ther e aprice break, next tier pricing, etc that would result from the 2nd bag being all "sold". Or if you were not planning to order it if you didn't have it all spoken for. Since from what I have read neither of those are the case, the answer for Mike would be "No, no incentive"
At the very least it would prevent you from having to post and manage an Ebay auction for the remaining resin :)
funman1
03/09/2007, 12:41 PM
ahh there is no other break once you hit 1 cubic foot, so 2 cubic feet is the same price.
Order placed.
I hope it will be here for the meeting, but it's not looking good.
I feel like a complete idiot for missing the meeting day by a week!!! I had it planned out all so well!!!
If it does not make it in time for the Friday meeting I will hold until the next meeting for anyone who wants, because of my mistake.

The DI is IN!!!!
Yeah!!!
I feel like I'm splitting drugs or something, with little baggies and a scale.
I'm still splitting it, but will let you know when it's all bagged and ready.
I'm putting it in 1.5 or 1.0 lb bags because I figure thats how most of us will use it, (one bag at a time). That way you don't have to open more than you need when you use it.
Here are some pics of what came in and such.

Hoh man!!!
Next time we do this, it will even be EVEN CHEAPER!!!
The place where I bought these two bags made a mistake by not removing the packaging label, and that gave me the name and address of where THEY purchase this stuff, (IE: Now we can cut out the middle man.)
So I went directly to that company, and just got a price quote back from them for
ONLY $130 + $40 shipping for a cubic foot of the exact same stuff!!!
The mark up on this stuff is just insane!!!
On the next group buy we can get it for like around $4.25 per lb!!!
MrMikeB

So can we send it back? :D Our 'discount' was a 100% markup... ack!

Steve, we can chalk up the price difference to R&D costs. No reason to feel bad about the price we paid this time, and we can be thankful for the pricing next time. Assuming that it may be awhile before we need to buy more - just don't lose the contact information - & don't drop out of MARS!

I contacted YR and they said they might be interested in purchasing some too..
If all goes well you should see small 1.5 lb packages showing up in LFS across the country soon.

Agreed! Thanks for putting the group buy together for us. I am wondering if MARS should put a "group buy vendors" on our website. That way if someone in the club wants to coordinate a GB - the person wouldn't have to do research again. :D Once again - thanks for putting this together.

I have perfected my equipment and techniques after doing this for many bags.

I also made up labels for the bags.

Correct. Store mixed bed resin no longer than about 9 months. Even if sealed, kept out of the light, and kept moist, mixed bed resin will loose capcity over time.

SOME cartridges the contain DI resin are refillable. Most are not.
Unscrew the DI resin housing, and pull out the cartridge. Check to see if one end of the cartridge unscrews. If it does, your cartridge is refillable.
From our FAQ page:
Seems like changing resin would be a simple matter of unscrewing the bottom of the cartridge, dumping the old resin in the trash, placing fresh resin in the cartridge, and replacing the cartridge in the housing. Well, almost...
It's how you place the new resin in the cartridge that's important here. First a little background on DI resins.
Remember that the vast majority of folks in this hobby who use DI resin take advantage of mixed bed resin. This resin is composed of small plastic cation beads and anion beads that remove positively charged, and negatively charged ions, respectively. These beads work most effectively when they are thoroughly mixed (which is the way they are when you buy them).
To assure the beads stay mixed together, pack the beads tightly in the refillable cartridge. Fill the cartridge to within a 1/4 inch of full with resin. Now pack/settle the resin by dropping the cartridge repeatedly (~40 times), rubber washer end down, on a hard surface from a height of about 1/2 inch. Essentially what you are doing is bouncing the cartridge to get the resin to settle. You'll see that it settles significantly. Add more resin and settle it again. You'll not see as much settling this time. Now fill the cartridge a third time to within 1/8 inch of the top and pack the resin a third time. If you see any settling at all, refill to within 1/8 inch of the top, replace the cap, and you're good to go! Packed in this way, you'll not see the resin separate over time.
