I've decided to try a DIY recirculating skimmer using 6" acrylic & an Eheim 1060....... I need input on whether I should have a straight pipe feeding the pump and a 90 degree bend returning the water, or a 90 degree bend into the inlet and a straight shot for the return.

While I have your attention, I plan on using 3/4" inlet & 1 1/4 outlet piping....... comments ??????

straight shot for the return.

You're already restricting the input with the venturi, so the elbow there just doesnt make a difference. You want the pump outlet to flow as well as possible.

I would dissagree. You want the pump mounted so that the water/air mix coming out of it is going up and into the tank. If the pump is mounted so that the shaft is vertical, air will get trapped around the magnet. That will stop the water cooling and the water lubrication. Both are bad. That's why all the manufacturers that I have seen mount the pumps that way.

Just my opinion. No flames please.
