Just curious how many of you out there have kept a blue hippo tang? Mine will be with me for 7 years this September. What about you guys?

I have had mine for 3 years and know it was in another tank for a year. He's only about 4 1/2 inches, but is really healthy.

My blue tang is only 5" long but is almost 2" thick. The fish eats like its going to the electric chair!

I've had mine for six years, she is around 9" and still growing, albeit slowly. A wonderful fish, one of my oldest :)

I have two and right now they are about 3'' and 2''. The larger one I have only had for about 1 year. the smaller about 4 months. The 3'' is a monster eater and I got when it was about 1/2'' long.

Pigs the both of them. But I love them.

But my purple has been with me for 5 years and a friend had it before me for 1 year and he got it off of somebody he knew.

My three year old blue...grew about an inch a year in a 30g tank....died along with the entire tank due to a couple malfunctions just weeks before my new tank was filled :(

I have had mine 8-9 years. Has survived at least 5 tank moves/reconstructions. When I got him he was about 1-1.5 inches. He's only 5 inches or so now.

Those are young. I have two which are about 14 years old. They were both 1 inch when bought. Now they are about 6 and 8. They've moved many times and survived a few deadly breakouts. My yellow tang is even older at about 16 years.

I've had my blue hippo for 4 maybe 5 months now, I bought it from a local reefer, About 5-6 inchs and thick too, eats ANYTHING that hits the water, takes a 8.5x11sheet of nori out daily :)

This fish will BEG at the clip for nori when it runs out, its funny, great fish!!!

How can you tell if its a male or a female ?

I've only had mine for about 4 months....he came from someone local. he's about 8 1/2-10 inches. Any idea how old he is? He's an A-hole btw. Picks stuff up like a trigger and moves it around the tank, picks stuff up and drops it to the bottom and breaks them like my corals. Picks rocks AS BIG AS HIM!! and moves them across the tank. he killed a 8 inch foxface, chases my other tangs.

Mine *can* be an A-hole to its other tank mates, but for the most part its pretty good, I'm in the works of gettin a bigger tank so I wont have to get rid of him/her :D

I used to care for one at an aquarium store that has been in captivity since 1989. it is really starting to show its age now and it is a little over 10 inches now.

I have one in a tank I care for that is 14 yrs old. I would say he is in the range of 6 to 7 inches without tail.

Krazy K, that's a great pic. Do you keep the flash off when you take pics of your fish? I wish my pics would come out that nice...

I use an older HP 735 photosmart, I use the macro setting or the F 2.6 aperture setting.

Flash is on AUTO

My fish used to all be so shy, now when they see my girlfriend or myself, they are at the glass hoping to get a treat, esp my blue hippo aka "fat-so"

:)

I try to get as close to the glass as the fish will let me without bothering them to much.

8-9 years on mine in a 90 G FOWLR and definately a pig as well. Has survived multiple moves (2 of which were between TX and GA!) Only disagreements between us are when he uses his entire 6" of body to create a water display that rivals that of the Bellagio in Las Vegas. Wife not happy about salt water on the adjacent walls, floors, and furniture. He doesn't JUMP per se, but rather does a quick "flip" at the water's surface and "tosses" water EVERYWHERE. Wish I could catch him in the act to post... It's funny, but it's not...

I had a hippo for 8 years that I lost this past summer due to a disease outbreak caused by my own failure to quarantine.

Interesting that so far we only have a record of 10" (which, don't get me wrong, is BIG) and took 17 years to get there...
