I have just purchased a Longnose Hawkfish and Pigmy Jawkfish (I think that is the name).

Both are in my 120l QT tank - I have added two base rocks for providing a structure on which they can perch themselves.

The problem is that the longnose swims the whole day close to the surface - just keeps on swimming at the top of the water column. The other hawkfish seems fine - perching on the rocks as mentioned.

The Pigmy eats well, the longnose does eat but not as well.

Any ideas what I can do to resolve this weird behaviour? Is it a problem? Should I cut short his QT and place him in my main tank (550l reef)?

I would, but Ive been known to not QT my fish as long as they say you should. If it looks healthy it may be acting that way because of the empty tank. Hawkfish like a lot of places to perch.

Hawks are some of my favorites but I never had a longnose. They all have the same habits though!
They love meaty foods. what are you feeding them? You could soak the food in some sort of garlic extract such as "garlic xtreme " by kent marine. The garlic might entice the fussy eater.

Sorry to hear that. I know why you were attracted to the Long Nose Hawk. I have one and love it. It must have not been too happy to begin w/. Mine was healthy and active from the word go. Very easy to catch because he is very inquisitive. And loves to perch. It couldn't have been your fault. I think that if it was healthy it would have perched on the glass bottom of your tank. Try it again and hopefully you'll have better luck.

sorry to hear that. are the longnose comparable to the flame hawk? i'm debating on the 2. i've had a flame until it jumped. i loved it, but would like to try a longnose. are they reefsafe? i hear they kill snails...?

I have 5 or 6 different types of snails in my tank and have never seen it attack any of them. I've also never seen him display any type of jumping behavior. Of coarse I have a full glass top on my tank. Easily my favorite fish.

I just picked up a long nose two weeks ago and he's been great, I have my own little recipe of my own that has some formula 1 in it, so far so good.

my longnose killed two of my shrimp. I guess he was hungry! Otherwise I love him, very personable.

any hawk will kill a shrimp if it wants. i had a non aggressive flame. it was my favorite. even left shrimp alone.
