Just wanted to pass a little find on to the rest of you, especially large tank owners. I was looking at large magnets to clean the glass of my 180g but was at Home Depot and saw a scraper.
It is called a 10" Walpro disposable taping knife. Its white plastic and looks just like a kent scraper. 10" wide and 7 " high and only 99 cents. I just used it and it cleans like a hot knife thru butter! This works better than any scaper i have ever used by far and is huge. I'm amazed how fast i just cleaned the entire front of the glass(2 minutes tops!). The only downside is you do have to have your hand in the tank but its so big and works so fast, you arent in very long.
Since its only plastic, it would probably work on acrylic as well without scratching but not sure. On glass, it is amazing. For less than $1, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Try cleaning a 72x24x24 with a razor blade, not fun! This is only slightly less effective and 10 times as wide and 7 times as high. Does the same job as a razor blade except instead of taking an hour, literally 2-3 minutes.

I do my 36g with a razor blade and that BITES! Takes forever and the tank is only 36g. I only wish it wasnt a bowfront so i could use this. they did have a bunch of smaller sizes at Home Depot so maybe theyll have one small enough to work on a bowfront.

Get the right mix of snails and you can keep it clean with just the magnets

I doubt i'll even get magnets now. This is MUCH faster than even the biggest magnet would be and much less effort at literally 1/50 the price of a good large magnet!
If you don't want your hands in the tank, don't get this. I don't mind getting in the tank for a few minutes once a week. Heck, this thing was cleaning so well and so fast, i was almost having fun doing it!
If you don't mind your hand in the tank for a few minutes, DEFINITELY buy one of these!

Razor blade. I'm suprised that some think it's a big deal scraping the glass with a razor. *shrug* It only takes 5 minutes to scrape my 100g.
But, I will check out that scraper. Thanks for the info.

No problem, glad i could help!
I've been wondering if anyone had picked one up and used it. Ive used it a few mores times since i posted this and each time am AMAZED how fast and well it works.
p.s.- i did go back and get a 2" and 4" inch ones for smaller spots and did notice that it was $1.39 for the 10" one. Not sure if they raised the price from.99c or if i got the price wrong when i first got it:confused: Either way, for the money, AMAZING cleaner!!

i use soemthing like that, but mine has a razor blade edge along the length of it... works great, but rusts after awhile.

I have a stainless steel 4" putty knife that works great!
I use the Kent graphite rods with attachble blades. The rod is really stiff and lets you get force down low. My tank will be 30" tall so i needed something on a stiff stick. It works very well so far from what I've seen!! I highly recommend it.

I saw those 7, 8, or 10 inch stainless taping knives in the same isle as the plastic one I purchased... I thought those would work great (for glass) as well, but the hardward which attached the plastic handle to the stainless blade appeared to be brass. Would that have any adverse effects on the water? they cost only $7 and change...

Just remove the handle....... and wear gloves. I use one of those plastic things and they work awesome. I just put on gloves that come up to my shoulders. You know the purple and orange ones.....

I use my magnet cleaner so often that the coralline does not build up that fast. But any little bit that does i use a razor blade but im going to give that plastic blade a try thanks!

I have found something very much like this but smaller!!
Used for my 65 gal. Dough Cutter plastic Scraper
This is about 4" X 3"
The main purpose for this was to cut bread scrap bowls!!
I found the scraper at bed bath and beyond about 1 yr ago.
Also bought a few extra cheaper online at foodservicedirect.com
Just search for: White Dough Scraper
