When they're fully extended like this one below (to the point where you can't see any shell underneath), they appear more of a really, really dark brown. Most pictures you see of them, have a slight retraction to make it appear darker.

EDIT: Ugh, scratch that. Started staring at mine somemore, and I guess they really are that black:p

they are totally black. they will appear brownish when bleached, usually in the areas where the mantle overlaps each other.

When I first got mine it was pretty black. Since then it's lightened up slightly to a very dark dark brown. I suspect it's because I put mine up pretty high. It's about 6" deep under the halide. Anybody else experience this?

capefear

no, i moved both of mine closer to the top of the tank, and they are jet black.

Thank you, Matthttp://planetsmilies.net/shocked-smiley-9455.gif

I'm sure there are nicer ones out there. The ORA b/w's seem to have a little extra oomph, don't they;)

Karl, Is that a new one that took up residence after selling me your other one. I figured there was a reason you were getting rid of the other one :). Lucky me...I should take a current shot of mine, it has grown quite a bit since I got it from you.

Yes, Alicia! My clam bed didn't have the room for 3 medium sized clams, so I chose to sell one. I do miss the one you got. Flawless mantle with a perfectly symmetrical shell. What a specimen:( ;)

Black maxi? I suppose, but not black and white. Many maximas are black and blue, especially small ones.

I bought 3 in Germany for 36,-€ each, two days ago a bigger one for 50,- €.

I guess it's the same reason gem tangs cost $3500 in the US & less than $500eu in Europe.

if your talking about this (http://www.marinedepotlive.com/black-and-white-maxima-clam---tridacna-maxima-clams.html) , that just puts you on a waiting list

yea a pic like that puts them in the peed off vendor section. It is misleading .I guess you have to read the fine print somewhere on their site.
