I have a DIY stand that I have not painted the inside of. It is not treated wood either. It's for a 75 gallon, with a 33 gallon sump inside the stand.
Should I paint the inside of the stand?
What's the reason for it, I'm guessing the wood would absorb condensation and warp?
What kind of paint is best for this? Thanks

I paint the inside with 2 coats of Kils Primer and then a coat of high Gloss Enamel for easy clean up.

I paint the inside of my stands with a concrete floor epoxy paint from HD. Works great and cleans up easy.

People paint the inside of their stands usually white so that the salt that gets out or is carried by water evaporation won't show since its white, while if its black, brown or whatever color it'll show. Guess really its up to you, if you want to see it or not.

Once all is glossed like WD said, cailk the edges for extra leak protection....my skimmer cup may floweth over but it never spills on the carpet :D

so the kilz is just for salt creep and possibly some light distribution?
While the gloss and silicone are used to waterproof it ( to a degree anyways)?

sorry dont wanna hijack your thread.

actually, most people paint the inside of the hood white to help with reflective properties of light.

never heard of someone using white to hide salt creep. technically excessive salt creep isnt a good thing, and one shouldnt have any. I have almost no salt creep anywhere.

and white for the stand, is because most paint used for this, the sealant kind of stuff, is white.

Has anybody had problems with unpainted or treated wood for their stand? I can't imagine that it would unless you had a leak in a bulkhead or something.

Moisture would be a problem. I caulked, then primed, then painted, the Poly'd. In the future, I would just use white marine paint.
