Read this on a few forums, bad idea? or insurance for leaks?

There is no need. Just use the gasket.

bad, makes the gasket x-tra slippery when dry. will actually cause more leaks that it will stop.

Bad, if the bulkhead will not seal when it is installed clean and dry you have other problems. Do not overtighten and do not hang piping off the bulkheads or it can put uneven stress on the bulkhead causing a leak. Always support any heavy or bulky plumbing. I use a short piece of flex tubing between pumps and bulkheads so vibrations and noise is not transmitted through the plumbing. Lots of pump noise problems are caused by rigid plumbing.
