Well, here goes. I am helping my brother(waynesworld) finally get his monster u shape tank put together. Below are some pics of where we are so far. He built a 2800+ sq ft addition on his house and had the tank and tank room roughed in then. We will continue to add pics throughout the week on our progress.
Tank is
102x16x38
85x25x38
128x28x38
Here is the side of the living room and hallway.

this looks cool. Did you consider having a rounded inside. That way flow wouldn't be so impeded. It would probably need to be custom acrylic tho. Not sure if you're using acrylic or glass.
NICE tunzes!

Hi fellas-
This looks like a really fun project and a very unique design. I have one big ?????
1200 gallon tank with who knows how much in sumps. Hot tub room.
I hope you have given serious consideration to humidity control.
(that was the question).
Oh, Oh...I have another. How are you going to seal the tank? Fiberglass/epoxy? Fiberglass/polyester?
dsandfort
02/27/2007, 01:35 AM
Oops, thought of another.
How do you tune 3 waveboxes to the "frequency" of the tank?

Hi Del,
1- There are vents in the fish room behind the tanks. The hot tub room will have humidity controlled fans going outside.
2-He is usins something called Sani Tred. It is used to seal alligator enclosures. After the 1st and 2nd coat of sealant, a liquid rubber sealant is then added.
3- He will only use 2 waveboxes....that means he has an extra, doesn't he...hmmmmmmm :)

Are you in town helping him Steve? First pics I have seen and all I can say is WOW! That is going to be super cool! I also see some dehumidifiers in one pic. to take care of some humidity problems. Are you all going to just fill it with tap? I couldn't imagin running all RO/DI in that thing, it would take a month!
Also in the rouph in plumbing did he install a drain from the tank to just open a valve for water changes?
waynesworld
02/27/2007, 10:37 AM
Dell Well since it is salt water I that I would go get a tuna fish to tune the tunze. Actually I am not sure how the wave boxes will work we will have to play with them and if one is extra I am sure Steve will make room for one in his new 3,000 gal tank he will be building. You know how big brothers are so size conches to there little brothers. The Humidity will be controlled with a combo of vent to outside, Dehumidifiers and Central air.
Angela Steve is down here and I do have two drains one in the fish room and another in the hot tub room. I will be using the Kati Ani unit for filtering water so I will not have any waste water and be able to recharge the filters.

Interested to see how those waveboxes are going to work on this tank. Did you check with Roger on the Tunze forum to make sure the frequencies will not negate each other when they hit at the connecting point?
RobTheReefer
02/27/2007, 06:12 PM
He probably/should have bought one wavebox and two "wavebox extentions". That's why you see that Y adapter sitting there. Two of the waveboxes next to each other pushing while the other one on the other side of the tank is off and vice versa.

Well we got the overflows built and Steve had to go home I am now trying to figure out were to mount screws for all the tunze equipment I want to have different options so what I am planning on doing is to drill holes in a 1x4 like 3 or 4 even spaced so I can glue the nylon screws to the board then attach it to the tank and seal it when I seal the tank. The problem is I want to prepare if I want to move it around for flow but don't want 100 screws in the tank sticking out. I am thinking that I will have a rock wall that will cover most of the screws and also camo the pumps some.

She gave me this strange look and said "you can have as big a tank as you want..........................as soon as we get a bigger house:(

is the acrylic going to be placed along the back as well? If so ohw is it going to handle the presure of the small boards running along the back? Or are you going to use the back as is with it sealec (with no acrylic?)
That's insane. Can't wait to see more pics! so I guess the center of the tank will be the equipment room?

Well got the seams done and now need to do the rubber liner that will have to be tomorrow I hope. I decided to use low iron glass from glass cages so I will try to pick it up on Tuesday or Friday.
all the sides except the front viewing pane will be plywood sealed with the sanetread product.

ricanboy57
03/19/2007, 01:33 AM
i agree. I'd be afraid something wasn't sealed perfectly and over time something gave way. but then again who know if any of our "normal" tanks won't just give way.
VikeBron
03/19/2007, 03:32 AM
The only way something will give way with the structure of that thing is an earthquake. It is built like a brick you-know-what. Wayne needs to show a shot of the back room. Insanely studded and double 3/4 plywood throughout.
The sealing is a slow and difinitive process(are you listening Wayne) and with being a wood tank, needs to be done to a tee. The stuff he is using is also used to house alligators and crocs. With the number of coats he is using(4-5....right Wayne:) he should be safe.
waynesworld
03/19/2007, 08:12 AM
Well there will be at least 3 but the 2nd is a very thick rubber coat and I got about double the recommended amount but better safe then sorry.
ricanboy57
03/19/2007, 02:36 PM
That sounds like a lot of support. Like you said, with it being a wood tank that stuff has to be done to a tee. I'm too much of a wuss to try something like that.

ive heard alot about stock tanks giving away at the seams. and stock tanks are only warrenteed if you have them on their stands too. 60 hexs, 180s giving away at the bottom center long panel, 150 cracked the front pane on a fw, ect...

I told Wayne if the biggest mistake only costs him $300 he is lucky. I will post some pics of the other two sides tomorrow.

Note on Sani-Tred as I was considering using it as well. But upon further scrutiny, you need to seal it with epoxy ANYWAY like MAS or west. But you could save money and just use the epoxy. The reason you must use epoxy is for UV protection- the sani-tred WILL break down unless you get their UV proof stuff, but guess what- the UV proof stuff isn't good for aquariums because of the chemicals used to make it. Don't know if I am too late, but save yourself some money and just use the epoxy.
waynesworld
04/01/2007, 07:58 PM
I knew that but I didn't want to use just use epoxy as it is not strong enough for the type of tank that I am getting, The paint or 2 part is just a UV protectant not a sealer.
thriceanangel
04/02/2007, 02:41 PM
Lots of people have used just the epoxy, it is very strong, and it's a very effective sealant.
Here is a link that may be useful. These guys know quite a bit about building tanks with plywood.

OK everyone. After filling....... and then draining and filling....and then draining again...and filling......and, yep....draining again....it now is water tight and looking awesome. I know somewhere in the previous posts someone didn't think waveboxes would work in a U shape tank.....NOT. Unbelieveable! We have to turn it down or it would go over the sides. The wave goes all around the U to the other side. I am going to video it tomorrow for all to see. There is so much movement in this thing with 2 waveboxes and 2 6100s. Too cool. We are still going to put another 4 6100s in. After the LR is in I would imagine it will tame the flow a little.

If you use are thinking about using epoxy, I wouldn't go with sani tred because it's not UV safe- it'll break down over time, and even sanitred says you have to use a UV safe epoxy anyway. Best bet is to use one of these:
http://jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/main.do;jsessionid=17D27B55827FBB68D15DEF98F29939F5

http://www.epoxy5050.com/
But I'd use the last one- best bang for the buck. They're used on boats so they are definitely UV safe, and should be all you need.

I wouldn't just "trust" marine coatings. I sell them and they all have their strong as well as weak points. That's why there are so many.
You might also look into Durabak (http://www.nonslipcoating.com/) coatings. I used it on my wooden loading dock and that is really extremely tough stuff. It is essentially like treating the wood with a truck bed liner. It has stood up to incredible abuse and I am very impressed with it.
Big warning: Most of these coatings are extremely noxious so you need to be prepared for that.
And another company to check out is Tennant (http://www.tennantco.com/na-en/products/coatings.aspx). These guys make top line coatings, many of which are low or zero VOC.

On this tank, the Sani-Tred was covered over with a UV protective paint.

I'll call my brother and find out if he doesn't see this today. I talked to him last night. He has some live rock put in but it is not arranged. The tank is on the back burner right now as he is dealing with health issues with his daughter.

Well guys, the tank is being drained and put on the back burner. Wayne just doesn't have the time to continue. He is going to focus on his little girl and his family. She is going to be starting the long chemo treatments on the 3rd and could be in the hospital all month. No time for reefing.
Please say a prayer for Amanda tonight.
Thanks

Well we are 4 treatments of radiation left and we will be done. Her last MRI was clean so we will have to take some new med to try to stop it from coming back as part of this study for the next 6 mths and then we should be done. The one thing that we have had going for us is our strong faith in the healing of Jesus to take care of her and her faith of no matter what she will win. A teacher told me that she herd my daughter tell a friend not to worry because even if she died she gets to go see Jesus. That just brought the teacher to tears as it does me too. I do appreciate all the positive comments on the boards as I wish I could have finished this I just can not seal the room off and get the ventilation I need yet to stop water problems to the house. I wish I would have taken a video of the wave makers in action though.

I'll say a prayer for your family Wayne, all the best from a fellow reefer up north.
Jamie.
Wayne....... we are coming out of a tough time too. The wife (38) just finished up chemo and life is settling down again. Cancer is tough on the family and unspeakably hard on the patient. I also have a 1 year old daughter so I cant imagine the stress you've been under.
Love on her every chance you can
all the best
