So here is our finger leather. It seems sick though it puts out a few stringy feelers for feeding still. pH 8.2 Nitrate 20, Nitrites 0, ammonia 0, Salinity 1.022 Temp 82 degrees. Any suggestions would be great.

Was there a pic you tried to post? How long have you had the Finger Leather?

could be a couple things with only those params. The nitrates, while not really really high, are still a bit above where you'd at least like to shoot for. Its best to stay under 10, but usually 20 isnt so bad...but it can still tick a coral off.

Second, your sg is too low. You need to bump that up to 1.025 or 6. My guess is that the SG is whats causing it, but leathers sometimes close for a few days to shed also, so it could be that.

We've had the finger leather for about a few months.
Thanks for the replies.

My guess would be just shedding as mentioned, my finger leathers only have stringy stuff during shedding. Also could be new bulbs, or new location? Different flow? even another coral nearby fighting with it. Try running a new batch of carbon during the shed and see if that helps, any other corals looking sad?

from the pic above it looks like its shedding, but it could very well be due to the nitrates and/or SG

The other corals look good, just have a star polyp and christmas tree rock. Haven't changed the bulbs or location recently. So what does it mean for it to shead anyway? Does it shead like the cleaner shrimp and coral banded? Complete molt?

ya i guess you could consider it like a shrimp would. Some leathers shed their skin and thats how they grow (usually when they shed they are a tad bit bigger). You'll be able to see the skin start to come off. My devils hand sheds like once a week, but it takes up to 3 days for it to shed, which kinda ticks me off cuz its only open half the time.
