Ideal would be 8.3
acceptable would be between 7.8-8.4
I wouldn't go higher, and really 7.8 is low, but my tank maintains at 7.8 and thrives nonetheless. Stability is one key factor to keep in mind. If you PH runs at a "set" amount, keep it there. Try your best not to let it fluctuate much. There is going to be some fluctuation regardless throughout the day. But even a 0.1 change in PH at the higher levels (8.0 and up) is a very very large change. If this is a new tank, expect PH swings as well as ALK and CA swings. It's typical for a new tank to flucuate these parameters for awhile. Give it 70+ days and the tank should normalize/stabalize to the point where PH should for the most part remain consistant.

Ideal is 8.3. But stability is more important.

Some people recommend a higher pH of 8.3-8.6. This is for higher calcification rates. But stability is the most important factor.

Mine stays rock steady at 80.5. I tried playing with it for a bit, but it kept going back, so I leave it there. Tank is pretty strong- have to frag my leather because it is so big.

Softie tank, BTW.

I agree that stability is the most important thing - it's easy, especially at first, to chase the numbers.
