View Full Version : Lowering nitrates without a refugium?

What other methods can be used to lower nitrates if somebody does not have a refugium?

More frequent water changes is the only thing I can think of.

Thats about it. Oversize your skimmer to help prevent nitrate buildup.

you could try the "DSB in a bucket" technique. haven't tried it myself but it seems like a cost-effective solution that doesn't take up much space.

What about a more wet skimmate on a properly sized skimmer?

Sorry to barge in but search is down and no one will respond to my crummy, boring ich queston.

The large hunks of rock really will make a big difference and I run various resins all the time.

try using a nitrate "sponge" type of product like purigen or chemi pure.

Interesting.. first time I ever hear of this. How exactly does it work? Throw it in a filter sock or something?

THANKS!

purigen is very fine and can go in any filter, just like carbon. It is expensive buy really good. I used to sell it.

Cool.

I currently run a filtersock for my overflow and skimmer so this can workout just perfect!

be careful, it has the consistancy of a fine sand and can escape easily.

As long as the grains are not smaller than 50microns then no problem! :)

Is there another way i could use this stuff other than puting it in my filter sock? Like some type of reactor?

Come to think of it, I wash my filter socks every 2days so that would be messy.

*It's expensive, but you can recharge it with bleach!

Ok so my last question.

How can I run purigen other than in a filter sock?

I am going to go buy some of this tomorrow. :)

they sell it in a bag also. or they sell "the bag" to put it in. works great.

I just picked up 250ml worth SeaChem Purigen and also got the matching filter bag.

I put the bag between my bubble trap baffles in my sump to get water to pass thru it. How long does this stuff take to work?

It says 100ml worth will polish 100gallons of water for 6months.

I used 250ml worth and I have 120g total water volume. Is more better or just a waste?

It will not actually "remove" nitrate. Treat it like you would use carbon and put as much in as you want. It will change color...that would be "colour"...we don't speak english down here.

GlobalEvan

it says that it will treat the water for "UP TO six months". How long it actually lasts depends on your water quality. Watch for the color change mentioned above.

A coil denitrator or a sulfur denitrator would be another option.
