What is everyone's turnover in their SPS tank?

I surge between 78 and 92X display turnover.

40x or so. Turnover rates don't mean a lot.

90x plus but as stated above this really means nothing... You want random caotic turbulent flow. I have 1 dead spot and I like it that way I can syphin the detritus right out of the corner whenever I need to...

approximately 40X for me. It seems pretty good now but as corals grow I am sure I will have to up that. Seeing the other numbers, maybe I should up it now......:)

Im with him. I keep one dead spot where poop accumulates and it gets siphoned out weekly.
surge from about 30 x to 60 x FWIW

hehehehehe, i can answer this question. if you see fish poop piling up in the corner or somewhere in the bottom of your tank, that is your dead spot :).

DMK....Do you have more than what is listed in your tag line?
Or are those modded MJ's?
no. 4 TUNZE 6000's @1850 each. 3 MJ 1200's @ 300 each and a 1000gph return. that's 9300g/ aprox 80 net gallons...116.25X.
i just added 4th 6000 yesterday.

you divide by 92, the total volume I believe....but you 'Just' added the 4 in place of the 3 for the tunze and the 3 for the 4 that was in front of the mj's in your tag line....since my last post??

u divide by water volume, not tank size. u can have a 180 w/ tons of LR, u will have no where near 180g of water, i have a 92 w/ alot of LR, i have around 70g net in display w/ around 10g in sump, it's half filled and it's 20g capacity, to get correct tunrnover, u only account for total net gallons, including tank water and sump water, and yes i just added the 4th tunze and subtracted a MJ in my sig because, like i said, i just added the 4th tunze thursday, and took away a mj, and added a multi instead of a single controller...
i may order another tunze to prevent another important deadspot. then i'll be @ about 139X turnover.:) that will be it though. time to load up on frags:rollface:

I think turn over is like watts per gallon... if you have a 50gal tank with 90x turnover that is way better then a 350gal with 90x turnover...
Plus you could have it set up to where with 200x you still have a few dead spots because of how you have the the pumps set up or you could have zero dead spots with only 90x because of how you have the pumps set up...
Again there is some truth to watts per gallon and turn over in a tank, but it is all relative and does not hold much water....
I am curious with people who have 100+ turnover what size their tank is and do they have trouble keeping sand on the bottom or are they BB?
prop-frags
03/03/2007, 09:53 AM
probably around 70x
Here's how I figured it (all numbers are GPH)
Closed loop: 3,600
Sump Return: 600
Tunze #1: 3,170
Tunze #2: 3,170
-------------------------
total gph 10,540
Water volume in display ~150g
10,540gph / 150g = ~70
Two words: Tunze Rocks!
u r coorect reefgeek, and i have a DSB, and i had a slight sandstorm for a few days after adding 1st and 2nd streams. after that, the only problem was that dunes were created pushing sand into different spots. they looked good though. some of my sand in center front was pushed to both corners against front. i have 50lb of new sand soaking now to replace, and i will place LR pieces on each side against LR and glass to prevent again. no more sandstorms.
and yes prop-frags, u are correct, TUNZE does rock!

Heh, I've got around 40'x on both tanks, one super squirt on the 58 and two on the 135. I'm considering a third on the 135, before I get it ready for coral. (patience is a virtue, patience is a virtue, sitting with a big empty, except for rock and sand, tank for a year will pay off... patience is a virtue...)

I don't remove rock volume when I calculate turnover.

u divide by water volume, not tank size.
I still believe you divide by total display volume, so in your case 92g. And since we are only talking about turnover in displays, no one is only half filling their tank. I've been told by many that you do 'not' take into acct. live rock displacement.
Happy Reefing either way....and flow on!!

tunze 6000 X 1850 gph surging
tunze 6100 X 3175 gph surging
540 pgh on locline returns
----------------------------------------
5565 gph/92 gallons= 60.49 turnover
only 2 dead spots up front, none in the back, even under the rocks!
