View Full Version : 75g vs 90g...

anyone have a preference? i like the 90g because the price for an extra 15 gallons is cheap, but at the same time i think it seems a little tall.

this is a 90g:

vs some random 75 gallon:

the 90g just looks tall in an awkward way. i think the 75 gallon tanks' shortened height gives it the appearance of being longer.

75 looks perfect.

90g all the way! The more water volume the more stable.

And once you're doing 90, just go ahead and do a 120 for the extra 6 inches of width. I wish I had.

90g. I've got a 65g that is the same height as the 90, but only 3' instead of 4'. I really like the added height, especially if viewing the tank standing up.

I've got a 90, and love the way it looks. It did seem tall at first when it was empty, but not so much after getting a few inches of sand on the bottom, plus having the extra room for stacking live rock is nice.

A shorter tank like a 75 would make it a little easier to get to things on the bottom when doing maintenance, but to me it's not a big deal.

I prefer the 75g. It's not as deep which makes it look fuller, easy to reach the bottom for a full cleaning, and takes less powerful lighting to reach the bottom of the tank.

All good points, hell I even like fish bowls!...:D

I went through the same thoughts a few months back when I was looking at either a 75g or a 90g. I went with the 90g, and am glad I did. The 75g would not let some of my corals grow out, and the ability to see more of your tank without squatting down is very nice.
This is my 90g a few months ago. Once you put the canopy on and everything else, it doesn't look all that tall.

That's where a good stand comes in to play :)

I think both have their advantages. I really like the way my 90 looks, but it is so much easier for me to deal with my 75 as I am a short person with short arms. I also think the pic comparison is a bit off as a completely stocked tank will look much different then a nearly empty one.

Both have their pro's and cons. If the 15 extra gallons are all you wanted, just get a bigger sump/fuge. If you want more space for corals, follow DrCBD says and go for the 120.

I went with a 75 for a few reasons, one of them being height. I think a tall tank looks out of place, imho.

I also wanted to save my powerbill and with a 75 I can pull off 175 MH as opposed to a 90 when 250 are really needed. For tank viewing, I just went with a taller stand.

Or you could go with a 110, same length and depth just 30" tall.

Very true, but you can only make a stand so tall. I designed my stand to be as tall as possible, but so that I could still reach into my tank without stepping on a stool. The top lip of my 90g is basically armpit height for me. :)

Make it too tall, and it can't be seen well when sitting on a couch or chair...

You are correct, that a well designed stand makes a big difference.

My tank is 24 high on a fairly high stand. The stool sits in front of the tank. Can sit on the stool to look in. When it's time to work the stools always ready.

I was in the same boat. I started out thinking a 58g Oceanic. Then it was 65 g. Then I took my wife with me to look at the 75, and she picked out the 90g. If I would have had the room, I would have gone 120. I was right at the threshold of "this is getting out of hand", but now that it's done, I love the 90 and am glad I bought it instead of the 75. I just got it up and running - here is a rough pic. Good luck. .

when i was upgrading from my 30 i first looked in a 45, then a 65 and last a 90. 90gal is one of the easier reef tank size to setup. Most only have one middle brace so it make getting lights easy. My next tank will most likely be a 180gal, I really like the size of that tank also.

I just bought a 90g, and i'm glad i didn't go with the 75. I think it's nicer having that little bit extra height.

Thanks - it's only been running a few weeks, so I have a long way to go. What I like about it though, and you can see from the pic, is that I could put a lot of rock in and still have a large swimming area at the top. This of course is a matter of personal preference, but I wanted a lot of rock, and didn't want it right up to the surface. Let us know what you decide. .

i just bought a 110g Tall, im having it drilled in the middle and it should be in next week, I like the tall look and if you want to keep corals that need more light just put them higher in your tank. I like the idea that i will be able to keep many different types or coral with the different light ratios i will have in my tank being so deep. I mean the ocean isnt 24" deep, why should everyones tank be lol. Go for it pimp!!!

this is an old thread but i find myself in the same boat 75g vs 90g one questions evaporation is it more with the 90g right? Will need more top off water?
Thanks,

I believe if you have the time and money to do a 90, do a 90. Generally the bigger your water volume, the more stable your system will be.

CruzinKim

The surface of a 75g is the exactly the same as a 90g, just 90g is taller, so you shouldn't have any difference in evaporation.

90 look nice, but 75 are easier to maintain and you can get away with cheaper lighting.

Me too, I pickup a aga rr 75g last night i like the look of a tall stand. My stand is custom made 36" high.

75, 90, 110 all fit on the same stand. 48X18. For a fowlr I like the 110, had it for years. For a reef, I like the 90.

I have a 75 gal tall and love the extra height for viewing purposes! I'm tall and I always foudn myself leaning over to look inside my 40 gal tank even with a tall stand.

I must say though....I have to get on a step ladder and submerge my entire arm in the tank to get to the bottom...and I have long arms.

Well worth it if you ask me!

i saw a 4" 150g the other day. it was tall and very wide (front to back). it was like a double wide made of glass (LOL). if i wanted a 4" tank and were to go past the easy reach of a 75g, i would definately go all the way to the 150g (assuming my budget could handle it).

I really think they both suck for a reef tank. I have an 18" wide tank now and it just isn't enough. Not only for aquascaping, but you waste light less than 24" width.

Aquarium makers shouldn't force us up to a 120 to get 24" width. How about a 36x24x24 ?

anyway, 90 all the way. A tall stand makes it look even better..this is mine with a custom stand i made

Also there is a huge difference in price when going from a 90 to 120.....

I have a 90 and do like it for the better eye level display dimensions, but one thing to keep in mind is the height vs. width ratio is much higher on a standard 90. If you aren't 6 ft. + tall, get ready for lots of sore armpits from working in a 90. It seems silly, but the extra few inches of height on a 90 make reaching the bottom for cleaning and aquascaping a little trickier. There have been many times I wish I would have gone with a 75.

A 90g with a taller stand, at least 32" to 36" tall gives one the wow effect when they walk into the room and see this magnificant view. Also, it is very close to eye level so guests don't have to bend over to look at the details within the tank.
