I know its a stupid question but-

besides the fact that its unsightly and it usually only grows when phosphates/nitrates are present (from what I've read, correct me if I'm wrong)

Whats the downside to having a little HA growing, wouldn't it benefit the tank by pulling excess nutrients out of the water?

If I am correct they will smother your corals - by physical proximity thus impeding waste removal as well as shading them from light for photosynthesis.

I guess it could overgrow some of your corals? But I think the real reason most people think its bad is the reasons you state; Its ugly and a sign of other problems...
