I have a 50 g display tank on the first floor with a sump underneath the tank. I plan to move the sump to the basement and the new run will be 50 linear feet away and 10ft below the first floor.

I ran the head loss calculator and it says I will have about 21 ft of head loss at 9 psi at 626 gph with a 1" diameter pipe Gen-X MK5).

My overflow has a capacity of 600 gph. I was planning to tee off the return line in the basement back into the fuge and frag tank with ball valves, so that I can basically run the return pump wide open and control the GPH on the return by the ball valves.

Currently my drain line from the overflow is 1" diameter and the return line is 3/4" dia.

Can someone recommend a pump and recommend the pipe diameter for the overflow and the return line. I have been told I should oversize the lines to prevent sponge and tube worm buildup inside the long runs.

Is it a bad idea to run 1" for the drain and return?

1" may be somewhat restrictive, but since the tank's limit is 600gph, it's probably enough. I would use spa flex to avoid all the fittings that would give you head loss & friction. It would cost a small fortune, but you can order a case online that contains 100' of tubing for less than you'll find locally.

I'd like to suggest something like the Sequence Dart because it only uses 160w of power, but I don't know if it could overcome that distance. Hopefully someone else knows a pump that has to push 21' vertically and yet only push 600gph. That's quite a trick.

Check out the specs on the Mag Drive Pumps, they seem to have the best head specs that I have found, also ball valves are not designed for flow control.

I would suggest a Panworld 150PS. Great with head pressure. Your idea of t-ing off the return to the fuge w/ ball valves is the way to go. That way you are not restricting output just redirecting it. Good luck.

btw - the panworld 150 PS is rated at about 1200 gph. Should be about right with your head pressure. If its not big enough take a look at the 250 PS.

For a 50G display with a 600 GPH overflow, you dont need a ton of flow to the display. How big of a sump and fuge will you be running?

I'll second the Panworld pump.

From www.savko.com, you can purchase flex pvc in 5 foot increments with a discount on full roll pricing.

I'll second the flex pipe. That is the way I went when I moved my sump to the basement. Made plumbing an absolute breeze - albit a bit expensive as noted. Using the Flex Tubing also kept all those 90 and 45 degree angles out as well. That helped in the head loss.

You will love your sump in basement. Besides the noise improvement in the display room, the things that you can do with the sump in a seperate room are endless.

I'll 3rd the Spa-Flex and the beauty of a basement sump. I'm using a Gen-X Mak4 return.
