View Full Version : Which pump for my return?

I have a 150 gallon reef.

I'm currently running a Mag 12 rated for 1100 GPH (at 4ft).

I'm breaking down a 215 FOWLR wich has a Mag 18 rated for 1350 GPH (at 4ft).

I was considering replacing the Mag 12 with the Mag 18 for additional flow.

Would this be a good idea or should I stick with the Mag 12?

I'm also going to add a SQUID for movement too.

The reason I'm doing this is I have 6 power heads in my tank! I figure if I do this I can remove 2 of them to reduce some of the heat in my tank.

Suggestions?

sounds like a plan. go for it if you have the pump.

Anyone else? Any reason NOT to do this?

I would do this: replace the mag12 with 18. Use the mag 12 on a closed loop and remove most of the powerheads. You can use a SQWD on the closed loop for alternating flow. Just my thoughts.

the sqwd puts a lot of head pressure on the pump and dramatically limits flow.

if you want to get rid of some powerheads go with a couple of high flwo stream type pumps, (tunze, hydor, mjmods.com)

i would personally go with a smaller return, but since you already have the pumps go with the 12

I personally don't like mags because of noise and heat issues.
Another thing to consider is that a scwd is going to reduce your flow by at least 25-30%.
Sump flow should be about 3-5 times turnover.
I have an eheim 1262 on my 180 and love it.
A 1260 might work for you, or you could look at the Oceanrunner which would be cheaper.
Both quiet and cool running.

Mag 12 is plenty for a return. Changing it out with a Mag 18 your really not going to notice much addition flow in the tank and end up taxing your overflows more and potentially more noise. Return pumps is probably the most uneffecient way to provide flow.

Your better off IMO to get some propeller style pumps of your choice to reduce the numer of powerheads. Switching out the return is not going to be a big enough bang.

Sqwd is a totaly waste of energy. The amount of pressure and loss of flow will be such a waste.

other than a noisy mag 7 which is a different design than the 12 or 18 i think they are pretty quiet. much quiet than any external magnetic drive pump. that wasnt really the question asked though.

youve got the pumps. go with it. i agree with twon...return go with 12 and use the 18 on the sqwd

Thank you. I think I'll just stick with the Mag 12 and forget the squid. And I'm going to try 2 Hydor K4s instead of the power heads.

FYI. To get the flow out of the Mag12/18 you need 1.5" plumbing.
