Hello all,
I am brand new, two month old 45g tank but set up as a Christmas present with cured live rock and sand and H2O from a friend's tank, so in 2 weeks it was 0 ammonia and nitrite. I have two anthias, blue or green eyed by the local fish owner. Well, they surprised me when they unhinged their jaws and looked like monsters. It only happens periodically and not when they are eating. I named them Boris (Karlof) and Bella (Lugosi). Does anyone know why they do that?
Thanks.

They are just stretching/yawning. Most fish do this. Gulpers like anthias have more noticable mouths...nothing to worry about.

I have a 10 inch Sweetlips that does this. It has a huge mouth. Really fun to watch how it eats. It takes big mouthfuls of the gravel and somehow gets the food out of it and then spits out the gravel.

I believe it also has something to do with posturing, territory. Sometimes we will have Hawaiian Bicolor anthias unhinge and lock jaws with each other (like they're making out). This can last upwards of a couple of minutes.
