DTs phytoplankton

I was doing a google search on DTs phytoplankton and came across a thread where a guy kept it in a gallon of tap water in sunlight constantly topping it off which made it renewable. I was wondering if anyone has ever done this successfully and if so can you tell me the proper way to do this.
