when a pump's specs mention "head", is it distance up from the pump? Or the amount of water above the device being driven?

I believe it is the total distance the pump has to push water from its outlet to the inlets in the tank.

head which is measured in feet is the pressure difference between the outlet and the inlet. So say your output is 3 ft above your inlet, look at the flow for 3 ft and that is what your pump can push. The more head, the less flow. Cheers
