planning skimmer

i was wondering if there is a rule of thumb or some type or formula as to sizing for a skimmer ie: 6inch cylinder 30 inch hieght or is it pretty much a guessing game

Depends on the type of skimmer. With most needlewheel pumps, you want to body to be 24'' or less unless you're using multiple pumps.

what i'm planning on doing is to have my overflow from my 120 go directly to it and have a needlewheel pump. i would like to only use one pump if possible
