Is hydraulic cement safe in a reef tank?
I know that many peoplr have had great luck using Thorite in their reef tanks to help build pillars and overhangs out of liverock. Isn't Thorite simply hydraulic cement?
I cannot find Thorite locally and was wondering if the Hydraulic cement found at HD and Lowes is the same and/or if it can be safely used in a reef tank.
I know some people (Sanjay and others on RC) put Thorite directly into their tanks without any adverse effects. I hope this can be dome with hydraulic Cement as well.
Thanks

Would think that hydraulic cement would cause a larger PH shift than portland cement would.

i think some google time may lead you to the anwser. ive heard that thorite completely cures in 6 hours, and can be used in the same day. some looking at the local hd and lowes revealed no thorite type cement. if what you say is true i think some people would be interested in getting there hands on some. the 6 week cure time is what turned me off to making cement rocks.

I've done lots of "Google time". I too have had no luck finding Thorite locally.

I am not interetsed in making rocks out of it but using hydraulic cement to attach LR together to larger pieces (piliars and such) much like Sanjay has here with Thorite:

Was it used to make "live rock" or used to attach pieces of LR together?

I found Thorite at a construction and architectural supply company. It was $50 for a 40lb bag.
I didn't trust anything from Home Depot - but if I hadn't found Thorite I wouldn't tied Mr Wilsons recipe. He's had some good results with it, though I think he does let it cure for a lot longer than 6 hours.

Someone that I shared my Thorite with mentioned that it was a lot easier to work with than the stuff he was using previously (from home depot)

I used Thorite 400 - Architectual Patching Mortar
It's the one I found the most reccomended.
Here's a link to more information about it. But do a search On RC and you can get more information about who has used it, and how.

Sorry maybe that was a too obvious answer - but thanks for belittling me. There is 109 references to Thorite on RC. If you dont pay for their search feature you can use google type this in the search terms:

site:www.reefcentral.com thorite

I was not belittling you rather slamming RC for their terrible server/search function.

I was a paying member and still gat very frustrated when 1/2 the time I was still not able to search. So, I no longer pay.
