I am wondering which brands are the most popular among marine aquarists (both for bulbs and for balasts)?

I have no idea which brands are sold the most. You might want to check with the sellers, wholesalers, and poll the users on RC.

As a side, just because something sells in larger volumes does not mean anything about quality and performance.
