How big does your refuge need to be to be effective? I have heard that it needs to be 1/3 of the size of your tank in order to be effective. Is this true?

i would say it would be a good idea to have it atleast 20gal for your 65gal tank.

Well, not really. The size needed depends on what the refugium is supposed to do, and so on. Many people are happy with refugia smaller than 1/3 of the tank size.

For a 65g tank, even a 10g refugium could help a lot with nitrate, for example. I'd size the refugium as large as is convenient, but even a small area can do a lot.
