i have a calloplesiops altivelis. when i get my 120 set up i would like to ge a second one.


is there any way to tell if theyre male or female?

The only truly reliable way is behavior. The best way to pair them IME is to use a divided tank for safety. Place one on each side and observe. If you have a mature male/ female it should be pretty obvious. My first attempt turned out to be two males, I did not use a divided tank and at first they just pretty much ignored each other. Then one day I came home too see that WWIII had taken place, I had to seperate them. I had a 55 divided into three sections, I seperated those two to the outside sections an placed a third fish in the middle. BOTH males immediately took interest in the new fish and stayed right at the glass putting on all sorts of fancy displays, as I say it was pretty darned obvious :D

david, you know a place to get captive bred ones?

Maybe C-quest, I know they used to breed them a long time ago. I think it's a fish considered "not commercially viable" and not commonly aquacultured. Spawning is random and infrequent.
