I want to replace my present skimmer [a berlin turbo] with one that will get the job done. I am running a 125 w/ a45 gal. sump I have a blue tang, potters angel,3 nemo,a flying grund, one sand siffter,a mandrin, and one purple psudoe. i also have a mixed assortment of sps,lps and soft corals about half a dozen each and will be adding more as money and time allow. I am thinking about a tunze 9010. will this work for me? is there a better option out there ? too many choices to little experience please help thanx.

It depends on how much money you want to spend. Do you want an in sump skimmer or an external one? If you want a in sump skimmer, what are the dimensions of your skimmer compartment in your sump?

I have been told that Tunze skimmers are pretty good, but I haven't used one myself. I bought an H&S from finsreef.com for one of my tanks. I chose it over Deltec because of some threads I read about poor service from them.

Also, it depends somewhat on your eventual bio-load. If you heavily stock and/or heavily feed, you need a bigger skimmer to get rid of stuff.

Here is a cheapy. Its rated for 160gallons which means 45G will be perfect! Also read the second link for mods. People have posted there 150G tanks running on this. Yes i know i am going to be bashed by posting a $100 skimmer, but i am a firm believer in buying what works and NOT a name brand.

give it a chance, read the second link

I don't want to bash that skimmer as I have never used it, but personally I think you need more. Did you guys think he has 45 gallons of water? That is his sump. He has a total water volume of 165 gallons. I prefer to over power the skimmer for my tank, but others don't.

You know, another option, if you have the space in the sump is get 2 of those skimmers and set one to skim wet and the other more dry. I have seen more people advocating this in the last couple years. I am not sure if it really makes a difference or not, but it is a thought, and at $200 for 2 skimmers, you still get it at a decent price.

I would make sure that you search for users of that skimmer and see how they like it first. I saw one that said it blew away a remora. That would be great on a 40 gallon tank, but I wouldn't try a Remora on a 125 with a 45 sump.

Oops, I thought his tank was 45 gallons:) I would go with a reefoctopus nw200 or an aquaeurousa unit http://www.reefnut.com/reefshop/product_info.php?cPath=47&products_id=113
I am pretty sure I would choose the classic 250:)
The tunze 9010 work as well, and be really quiet.

I really like my Octopus NW200. I did the recirc, gate valve, and did the enkamat mod and I am very impressed. I had a ER before that got dropped, smashed, and this does just as well if not better. For around $200. For the price it is tough to beat.

the octopus skimmers are hard to beat, but the aquaeuros (made by the same company) seem to be doing so.

Yep, you can get the huge aquaeuro with 3xNW pumps for around 235 bux....and it would skimm a 250g fine imo, and this way you won't have to ever get another skimmer. And its much cheaper than teh tunze.
