I have a 75 gallon hex drilled with overflow box built in already.
The tank is 30inches deep and the overflow drains all the way down to a pre filter which is very hard to get to and change.
I also Have a 65 gallon that is only about 24 inches deep and the over flow fills up with water and drains down a pvc pipe.the 65 gallon is has much less noise. i have tried to do this with my 75g
hex and it didn't work at all ( made crazy sucking noises ).
which way is better water in the overflow or without .

Try putting a 90 degree pvc elbow on the part that is doing the slurping. If the water is being sucked thru at an angle it should not change anything other than noise :)

You need a Stockman or Durso standpipe. There are a ton of threads on their construction and usage here. Total for PVC parts might run you $3 or so and I know my modified Stockman is completely silent.

can a standpipe be modified for a tank that is drilled on the back instead of the bottom?

why can't the companies just make quiet motors?
