That’s right, today at around 4:00PM Dan and I stripped around 50 fry from his bangaii cardinals. They are so awesome, Dan and I did a make over on my 30 XT and put the fry in it. They are already gorging themselves on the Reef Nutrition Roti-Feast and schooling around in the tank.

Pics to come soon.

Hey Cris, what are your thoughts on groups of these. I wanted to add a few but have read that they will end up pairing and the rest will die off. Should I wait till they get a little bigger and add just 2? I have one right now thats been with me for years do you think then I should only add 1 of these new ones?

Hey Chris-

The rest of us mortal folk don't have the luxury of a 600 gallon reef :). That really opens up some doors for you. My opinion is that you could add a small group with relatively few problems. Steve Hurlock has a group in his 500 gallon that were my babies from a few years ago. He put in 10 and still has 5-6. They kind of hang out in separate quarters but don't seem to fight. The downtown aquarium has a sizable school and who knows "who's with who". These babies won't be ready to go into a reef tank for a few months. They also have a tendency to "shock". Turning on the lights, during feeding time, when the Nuggets are out of town. Meaning that it just happens and it is hard to predict. I have read that it is a nutritional issue that causes it to happen. You can revive them sometimes with a little water flow from a turkey baster.
Anyway, when the time comes you should put in a small group of 4+. I think eventually they will pair off but you have the room to host a couple of pairs. IMO.

Can they be from the same family though? I mean this batch of 4+? There won't be inbreeding issues or quarrels?

When their ready, could I buy 2?

o.k. thanks Cris, I was planning on waiting till they get at least an inch or more because I know my larger fish will eat them right away, I feel like I have pirahnas sometimes, actually these tangs are much more aggressive at feeding time than pirahnas :)

I feed 3-4 times a day and they still act like they never get enough.

o.k. back to the topic now.

Yea Russ, Someone said you dropped off some frags this afternoon and I proceeded to point out which ones you brought. Funny how the colors of your sps are so easy to spot.

The cardinal fry are very cool looking. Never seen anything like it and it all happened in captivity. I'm impressed! If you get a chance you should stop by Exotics and check em out. Eventually I would like to add a cardinal or two to the tank.

The one in the fuge is twice the size as the rest. I know where the next batch is going!!!!

We lost 43 out of about 50. The loses stopped after Scott removed the aiptasia in the tank he was using for grow out. There was one that made it out of the Dad's mouth before we made him spit out the ones we have now. The lone ranger made it down the drain and out of the filter sock. He is huge and living in the fuge.

Sorry to here about the losses. Man so much of this hobby is trial and error. I was really hoping for one of the fry at some point. Can the conditions be repeated for a second go round.

crisc
04/24/2007, 09:44 AM
That is too bad. I know it took me a few rounds before I had any kind of success rate. If it is not the aptasia, it is their diet, lights turning on, overflows etc. Sometimes I felt as if they would hear me sneezing and shock out and die. Keep trying, it will bring rewards if you can get them to a bigger size.
