i was wonder what could be used beside magflake to dose Mag to a tank and also how much to dose

Well, epsom salt is easily available and not so bad to dose. You'll need a magnesium test kit, and then this calculator should help:

You could also use one of the commercial brands. I use Kent Tech-M

It is listed in the calculator Jonathan posted.

Remember that if your mag is low, it initially takes a lot to get it up to recommended range. The good thing is once you get it up, it depletes rather slowly.

so i look at what to add for espon salt. It says 31.06 ounces. Is that 31.06 of salt in water i am guessing. i have to from around 1200 to 1300. does that sound like alot and it says try a small amount first then the rest. what am i looking at for the small amount? then the rest just add as top off in a way.

Yes, dissolve it in ro/di water. It does take a lot of suppelment to raise mag. The nice thing is once you get it up there it depletes rather slowly.

You may want to do 15 oz today and watch your livestock for a day. If all looks good, add the rest tomorrow. :)
