Hey guys, I have a 75 gallon in-wall system and I like to keep a tang in it to help with algae control, plus I just like them. I have kept a scopas tang before and had no trouble, he had plenty of room to swim and lots of places to dart in and out of the rockwork. I lost my tang, and most everything else a little over a year ago when the ex-wife moved out (pretty sure she dumped something in the tank). Anyway, Its taken a while but the tank has recovered nicely and im looking to add a tang to the tank again. I realize a 75 gallon is small for a tang to begin with but which tangs would be the best option for a tank this small? The important criteria to me are 1. Tank is roomy enough for the animal. 2. Tang is good at algae control. 3. Tang is interesting color / pattern.

What do you guys suggest, other than getting a larger tank. Right now the 75 gallon is the largest tank I have room for, but I will be relocating closer to charlotte in 3-6 months and plan to go up to at least a 150 at that time, possibly even a 180

won't get too big for tank and never stops picking at the rocks.

Yellow or a Kole would be OK.

i have a Powder Blue in my 75g. got him about 1 1/2+ ago, and he was about 3-4". now hes about 4-5". he never really did much for algae, but i have never really had an algae problem. hes to spoiled to look for food on the rocks now :D.

The tang police are going to be all over this one. lol. I would start out small with whatever tang you like...once it gets too big I would trade him in at the LFS. Maybe it isn't the best option, but it is an option.
My hubby has tangs in his 75g, but if they get big then they go in my 180g.
Good luck!

Thanks for the idea of a Kole Tang. I'm seriously thinking of getting this as my showcase fish for my 65 gal.

in my opinion, you can never go wrong with a kole tang

I would have to agree with the kole tang as your best option. They also have a rather unique and subtle elegance to them. Most people gravitate to the yellow or the Pacific blue tangs, while the kole always ends up being the more unusual and exotic seeming compared to the other, more commonly available tangs.

If it's a question of moving to a larger tank, and you have big plans for big tangs, why not just wait those 3-6 months, move (into a larger tank, too!), cycle, and add a larger tang then when you can pick whatever you want? It'd probably be a heck of a lot easier to do it that way than to catch a tang -ANY tang- out of a tank to move it into an unstable, new tank. Just a suggestion.

I have plans for the move, I wont be selling the house im in, im going to rent it out, so I will be able to leave the tank here and running for a month or so until I get the new tank up and running and settled in. As far as catching the tang, he wont have much space to hide in when all the water is out of the tank :D Thanks for the advice, Im thinking of probably getting the kole tang.
