Can caps grow vertically?

Just wondering if anyone has any caps that have grown upwards, or do they all grow horizontally? The reason I ask is because I have a few caps in my tank which I were hoping would grow vertically but the new growth is just starting to branch horizontally. I guess thats what they like to do? Time to move some coral around I guess..

They normally don't grow straight up. They grow out and overlap. Map cap started growing on the back of my tank and it is growing straight up the back but that is not normal, it's just that it has now more room.

There are different types of Montis though that grow differently. For example the Whorling Monti.
