Hey all....

Just wondering what chiller you are using for you 24 gallon All-In-Ones?

The goods of it?
The bads of it?
How noisy is it?

....and lastly....would you recommend it?

The warm season is on its way and I'm trying to get prepared.

Thanks :)

I use a JBJ Nano Chiller. It's small and not too noisy. I have a hood on my nano cube so I had to cut a couple of holes in the back. Works great. Now I have a consistent temp.

Modding the hood should not be a problem.....that is what got me into this mess in the first place. I strapped 2-70watt MH under the stock hood of my AP24 and now I have a heat problem....go figure :D

I use a jbj 1/10th. Yah I know it's overkill, but I won't have to buy another one, when I get a bigger tank.

I had a 1/20th, before that I felt it got over worked.

jbj 1/5th for me, even more overkill (24 gallons)

how did you set it up

BSimm
03/26/2007, 07:56 PM
Yes...I'm curious about a set up as well... I put a 150 MH into my NC24...

Nice work SBC... looks clean. I'm looking seriously at the JBJ 1/10... in case I want to upgrade later. People say the JBJ's are pretty quiet. I'd love to know if that is true.

Let us know what you decide.

All Delight,

You forgot to tell your tank size?

what sort of flow do you guys have going through those jbj nano chillers?

Do you guys think it is better to buy a chiller, or to use unconventional ways like a fan or by freezing water bottles? It was 80 here yesterday, and my temps got up to almost 83.

I use a JBJ 1/20 on my 24g Aquapod. The benefit of the smaller chiller is that it requires less flow. Setup is very simple. I pump water from one chamber using an MJ1200 connected to a U-tube and flexible hose to the chiller. Return is plumbed the same to the other chamber where the cooled water is then returned to the tank.

Some pictures here. (http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=97232&hl=texsun)

Wow sorry guys. I didn't subscribe to this thread so I didn't know there was some replying to do.

EZ - I answered your pm yesterday, but if you still need help pm me and I'll give you a call.

Disney- I used a RIO800 and turned the pump to 3/4 flow. My pump is in the middle chamber and is connected to the tubing for the inlet of the chiller. The chiller return tubing brings the cool water into the 3rd chamber. (Basically the same as Texsun's). Check out his pics. I was gonna post some of mine, but his are there and its the same.

BSimm - I'd highly recommmed the 1/10th. I like the digital display. However, I don't know how it compares in the noise department.

Cattleman - JBJ 24 gallon

thecichlidpleco - Definately it is better to buy a chiller. I don't know if your open top or not, but if your closed and you use a chiller you don't have to worry about evaporation. If you use fans evaporation becomes a big issue. To keep salinity stable you'll have to get a ATO. I would highly discourage you from adding RO using the eyeing approach. I tried this for a few months and my salinity was all over the map.

Texsun - nice thread on NR.

Thanks guys for the input!!

TEXSUN - Thanks for posting the link.....

I think my mind is made up....I'll be going with the JBJ 1/20. And....since it was my wife's idea...I can't go wrong

If anyone else has any experience with any other nano type chillers..please let us know

i have a question. does the mj1200 have enough power to pump water down through the chiller and back up to the system? I have a 24NC. Im lookin for chilling options as well.

What are the current prices for the 1/20 and 1/15 anyways? I got lucky when I got mine. I paid $400 out the door. But that was right before the price increase. Like 1 day. :)

shouldabenacowboy - I think you should get the 1/15th. When I had the 1/20th, it seemed like it was borderline.

shouldabenacowboy
03/29/2007, 04:01 AM
What would make it borderline? Did it run for a long time and often to get the temps to drop?

I see that the 1/15 has 300 more btu than the 1/20...that is 1/3 more power. I'm just wondering.

Any info would be appreciated :)

I just got the new Sea Line Platinum 1/10hp chiller. It's made or marketed by Pacific Coast Imports, the company that does Gen-X pumps and a bunch of other stuff. One reason I got it was it requires a lower flow rate the their previous model. I can use an mj1200 no problem.

Got mine on ebay. Most stores looking for $400, ebay was $320

seal line chiller on ebar (http://cgi.ebay.com/Sea-Line-1-10-hp-Water-Chiller_W0QQitemZ140086247433QQcategoryZ43556QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem)

The mj1200 used to just return straight to the tank, now it just goes to the chiller first, then to the tank. Still through the bulkhead in the false wall.

i decided the 1/5th pump is simply too large for my set up.
u guys think a 1/10th is better or a 1/15th?

It sounds like a good deal, pros and cons?

Got a box from DRS on Fri, but had some kind of eclipse POS--They screwed up my order!

They told me that as soon as the return gets there they'll ship my chiller 2ND day air. lol they'll get it right yet!

Using the Pacific Coast CL-280 1/10 HP Inline Chiller on my Aquapod 24, works like a charm. I had one of these on my 55 before and it worked great for that as well. I have the 150 MH so it is actually getting some work, very quiet and efficient.

Just got my JBJ 1/15 today. nice. The thing has a fan that sucks air through a big area in the front and circulates air through all the parts. I didn't know this brand's design was so advanced in its air cooling.

I've been doing research on chillers for a while and liked this model as soon as it came out. This is analog in its control which means my 6-year-old son won't be "beeping" any digital buttons. I'll just put a piece of packing tap over the control dial and he won't mess with it.

Another feature I like is the low volume of water flow needed for operation. 160 GPH max. Some of the comparable models had as much as 500 GPH suggested. I'll use a dedicated Eheim 1048 running exteral for my JBJ.

If there's any interest I can review in a month or two, we're in the middle of a long cold spring here in RI and the chiller hasn't turned on in weeks. On the bad side, my temperature probe on the chiller needs to be replaced. It was reading some wacky temps and when I called Pacific Coast they said they had a bad batch and would send me a new probe. I have to install it myself, but it's easy and I guess better than having to send the whole unit to CA

I'm running the 1/15 hp Prime Chiller on my 24g AP and it's working great.

Pros:
- It pulls temps down very efficiently.
- It has a dual stage controller which allows it to regulate temps using a heater when it gets cold and the chiller when it gets hot.
- Good looking design with digital display.

Cons:
- Not quiet. It's as loud as a small fridge turning on. I have it in my office. Noticeable but not annoying.

I ended up getting the JBJ 1/15....same as cattleman. It is very quiet when it turns on and I have it fed with a MJ900. So far so good...It usually runs for about 10 minutes before turning off.

Does anybody know if these types of chillers can be hard-plumbed, or do they just have to use hose?

You could always have a short section of hose and hard plumb it the rest of the way.
