Give it to a LFS or post for sale in a club forum on reef central that is near you, you can most likely sell the rock if its not covered in hair algae or something.

what about the sand?

post in the Chicago forum on here (or your local club) and I'm sure someone will either buy the LR & LS from you, or at the very least you can give it to someone who will want it... probably could have sold your fish too.

Worst comes to worst the sand will become dead sand but dont throw it out just let it dry out try selling it with the lr

make some money kid, or put the sand and rock in a 5 gallon container. you can pick one up at home cheapo. then when your ready to start again a few rocks will make it all live again.

Put the sand in a bucket after draining and it should be ok to use. I have reused crushed coral after letting it sit for 5 years.

BiggySmalls
03/27/2007, 07:26 PM
do you mean let it dry out then put it in the container ??

When I let stuff sit I dump it in a 5 gallon bucket, drain it the best I can, let it sit a day and drain it again. Do this 2 or 3 times and it will dry out. The last batch I dried out I then left sitting outside in the car port (covered from the elements) for a week.

I say keep the sand and rock and use it for base material in the future. I'm sure we are all familiar with the costs of starting with absolutely no supplies.

yeah keep it and reuse as base rock for the future coraline will always grow again. on the sand i would probably just give it away or throw it out if its 2 old it may have alot of detritus and may not be good anymore (bb guy talking here)

Make sure you rinse it really well with fresh water. Store it in a bucket for a few days and rinse again then let it dry out. Save your self a few bucks in the future.

You've made the right decision. If you don't have the proper time to care for your tanks it is best to wait till things settle down. You'll appreciate the tanks much more when you have the time to give them the attention they need.

id keep it if you plan to set up again within 3 years.. it dont take much space.. if longer then sell it to give it away to someone.. .. i really dont like giving stuff to the LFS... why.. well they are gonna sell it and make $$ that you could have.. but they also charged you a arm and a leg for it in the 1st place.. but id go in the order off keep it ( 3 year thing agin ) sell it, for free to a poor reefer..

What type of fish? I am fairly local to you and depending on what you have I may take it off your hands.

Before you do anything, post on the Chicago club forums, as someone already suggested, and list your rock and sand for sale. Someone will buy it and probably come take it right out of your tank. No need to rinse it or put it in a bucket yet. Rocks and sand at a cheap price can be like gold to some.

here's the link to the "for sale" section, post up what you've got for sale inlcuding livestock, rock and sand. At 15, I'm sure you could use the extra money. Good Luck.

Sell everything, including the tank. I would also sell it to locals instead of the LFS. If you're going to start in 3, 5 or 10 years, you may as well sell the tank now to someone else that can use it. Who knows how well the silicone will stay sealed if left dry for all this time... may as well sell everything.

BiggySmalls
03/28/2007, 06:50 PM
how much would you sell all this for?
nano cube 24g dx 5 months used
20lbs of live rock
20lbs of live sand
flame hawkfish
valentini puffer
true percula clown
yellow clown goby
bi color blenny
blue damsel
green star polyps i bought for 40 dollars they are big
sponge or hooded crab
few hermit crabs
few snails
???
how much do you think i can sell this for?????????????

tangyreefer05
03/28/2007, 09:30 PM
do you have any pictures of the tank?

BiggySmalls
03/28/2007, 09:48 PM
no i dont have a digital camera , but it is a nano cube24g dx
nothin wrong with it, and a little coraline algae growing on the back

tangyreefer05
03/28/2007, 09:56 PM
only you can really make that choice. its your tank, add it all up and take off what you think is right for being used and in a bulk package, I have a friend that might be interested. Chicago is about 2 hours so Its borderline on distance.

Why not keep it? It shouldnt be that hard to maintain, you are 15, some 15 year olds could be busy i suppose but still you don't think you can maintain the fishtank? I really think you will regret selling it if you really have a nack for saltwater fish and reefs. When I was your age I used to be in and out of hobbies all the time often regretting what I had sold etc down the road. You will lose money and the investment. Sometimes you should take time to enjoy the tank.

If you see the tank going downhill then you are doing the right there here. But I think you could manage it heh.

Why would you feel the need to say this? You didn't even follow his posts enough to know he didn't get the lemon peel.

Biggy, so sorry to see you go - but I totally understand -
Definitely go straight to your local Chicago club as mentioned above - you may be surprised at how friendly & helpful they'll be...

That said, you could sell off the livestock (fish & corals) and let the tank go fallow. The only maintenance would be top-offs. A tank can go like this for years - then when you decide to add livestock again, you'll have a pretty stable system (check params, do several large water changes and you're back in business)

HTH :)

Also look at old posts on your local club's buy/sell forum to see what similar tanks have gone for in your area :)

I'll miss you Biggy :( Have a good 10 years :D
(And your unanswered question is better answered on your local reef forum - that why no responses, I think)
Ta-ta for now :D
