View Full Version : Which Dip Will Be More Effective?

I'm picking up a Monti frag on Friday, as well as a bunch of LPS goodies. This is my first attempt at SPS coral, and I like to dip my corals before introducing them to the display. I have two options. 1: A saltwater dip using Seachem's Reef Dip. 2: A Lugol's dip. What do you guys think would be the most effective?

Some aquarist believe that Lugols is bad for LPS. I would go with the Reef Dip and/or freshwater dip.

Freshwater? I don't think you'll find hardly anyone here that would recommend a freshwater dip for a SPS.

I think lvreefer was talking about freshwater dip for the lps

what are you wanting to try and get rid of, I haven't heard of one dip that kills everything

Not trying to get rid of anything specific, just as a general preventative measure.

if you want to never have red bugs you'll have to also do interceptor dips

Interceptor is the canine heart medication correct? I could probably track some down, but not by Friday. Do they only target certain species? Is my Montipora going to be at risk?

I dip all sps in interceptor for at least 2 hours. I blow it off with a turkey baster once every hour. I have also dipped with Tropic marin.

There are many good threads on RC about preventative dips, given all the horrific infestations that have cropped up the last several years. It's cool you are thinking about dipping - that's a very smart thing to do. I like TMPCC, but there's just no substitute for quarantine.

Yes, quarantine would be ideal, but at this point I don't have the capabilities to quarantine corals. What is TMPCC?

Tropic Marin PRO-CORAL CURE. I use it on all my incoming corals (SPS, LPS, etc).

if this is your first monti you really don't have to worry about qt, as your main tank will basically be a qt as there are no other monti's to infect.

red bugs aren't a concern on montis if you don't have acros in your tank.

i would dip in either tmpcc or lugols,

I always use tincture of iodine which is the same as using lugols but it can be found at most drug stores and is alot cheaper. I use 10 drops of tincture per 8oz of tank water. There may be other methods that work better for sps but this is what i always used for my zoanthids and other corals before i put them in my tank. Im now at the point to where im gonna set up a quarintine tank since im getting more into sps just to be safe and be sure i dont waste a ton of money on sps corals just to introduce something into my tank that can kill off my other inhabitants which will cost me alot more then a simple quarintine would cost.
