Anyone have any experience with a hang on back skimmer, I'm looking for one for a 50G or so tank, thinking Remore, Tunze, any other's out there?

here is an awesome hob that ime, outskims the aqua c remora hands downs and even outskims a similar sized euroreef needlewheel.

the bermuda aquatics hob shown here is skimming very wet (yes...i know...please, ive heard it all before about wet skimming). its cup is one days worth. the er es5-2 shows 3 days worth of skimming.

the purpose of the pic is to not show wet skimming but to demonstrate the difference in time it takes to achieve the same (approximately) amount of wet skimmate.

I was looking at the tunze because I believe it hangs on the inside and it will not need to be in the sump, I'm trying to do a reef without having any kind of sump

no sump is ok, but having a sump is a LOT better:)

I agree with kodyboy that a sump is better because it enables the surface scum to be skimmed.

kodyboy,

(1) Do you know of an excellent HOB skimmer with a surface skim box?

(2) Do you know of a surface skim box that can easily attach to the side of an aquarium that a HOB pump can rest in?

(3) Will this surface skimmer work with most HOB pumps: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=12703&Ntt=surface&Ntk=All&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&N=2004&Nty=1?

I just got a Deltec MCE300 and I'm very impressed with it. I have also read the negative reviews... but mine must be a 'good' one or something. It skims tons of stuff, is really quiet and starts up without issue every time I turn it on.

I've had this skimmer hooked up for about 5 days, so there might be some unpleasent suprises coming. But so far, the MCE300 is everything I was looking for in a skimmer. Highly recommended.
