View Full Version : Pistol Shrimp

Hi all!

Keep hearing a clicking noise coming from my tank. It's quite loud and sounds like a gun shot. I can't always hear it, but there are periods during the day when it happens quite frequently. My question is... have I got a pistol shrimp and what are the implications if I have one? Cheers, K

IF it is a Pistol Shrimp - you are fine.

IF it is a Mantis Shrimp - you may have some problems.

pistol shrimp
it could attack small crabs and shrimp and even small fish...mine does it to scare off whatever goes near his cave...he even scared off 2 brittle stars at the same time

Do mantis shrimp make a clicking noise? Would I have noticed that I had a mantis shrimp by now? tanks been running with fish for 2 months.

1) Yes they make a clicking noise just like a pistol shrimp.

2) Look for small piles of cracked shells. This is usually how you can find them.

Mantis and pistols both make a similar clicking sound.

Two types of Mantis Shrimp, smashers who bust shells and stabbers who spear fish.

Pistols are cool. My buddy just bought one. I couldnt believe how loud the pop was from outside the tank. Anyways shouldnt be very hard to find him. The dont hide like the lil pepermint shrimp do.
