I do a water change every week 10% and check my phosphates with a saleifert kit....and absolutely have no algae in the main tank at all and very little in the fuge...is this because of low nutrients? and some of my sps are brown??

How often you need to clena your glass is the best indication of po4, but the salifert kit is worthless. By the time you get a reading your tank looks like a lawn....

I clean my glass every 2 weeks and thats basically because I add phyto and it sticks to the glass a little...I just added 3 400 watt 10k's Im thinking that was the problem to little of light...but I have not a trace of algae anywhere...Ive seen tanks with double the fish look a lot better? Im wondering If Im doing to much?

Reef-Daddy

If your phosphates are low how often should you have to clean the glass?

I have been battling high phosphates (installed a phosban reactor and using rowa) and the need for cleaning my glass has slowed dramatically but I still have to wipe it about every 3-4 days. It isn't bad but it gets a little distracting as I like my glass as clean as I can get it.

5 days before you NEED to clean it. I've found that level equates to about .03-.04 in my tank.

Joe 2 weeks is great you must have super low nutrients!

so you think thats my problem then??? I probably wouldnt need to clean then but I use the green phytoplankton a few times a week...

If you get green algae growth on the glass, you're PO4 is too high.

Best way to find out is to get a Hanna meter or borrow one from a friend :)

Joe, you're feeding a lot. I would bet that your phosphates are high.

I have about 17 or 18 fish and feed 4 cubs a day and 1 nori slip is that to much???I can cut back again but seemed like last time I did things definately went down hill????If I post pics later can you tell from the tank look??

REEF-DADDY,

When you say NEED to clean it how much algae would you say was on the glass? At the three day 3-4 day mark I am seeing a little from the front of the tank and can see it pretty well looking down the side of the tank at the front pane.

You can see it standing 3 feet from the tank. I typically clean my front glass everyday, more as something to do. But I need to clean it about every 5 days

ok going to cut back again on feeding...and acclimate everything to my light no matter what the other persons lights are! what about shipping water can that effect corals when they are added???Seems like when I got then the color was gone?

I am seeing you have lotsa big fish and ca reactor. I bet your po4 is indeed high. Is there someone in your local area with a Hanna?

Hendersonracing

what is a hanna is that a po4 detector? and were can i get one?

jay24k
04/09/2007, 09:49 AM
I had 22 fish at one time and I didn't even feed 4 cubes of food a day. I think you are feeding way too much. Unless you have fish that require more frequent feedings, I'd cut it back to every other day.

Im with you...I think that was my problem...and before that lasck of lighting.....I have definately learned the hard way...Im going to do a few big wc's and hopefully straighten this mess up..

MrPike

Those pics look dim, what kind of lighting are you using?

MrPike
04/10/2007, 08:57 AM
Nevermind, just saw where you specified. Id wait a few months for your corals to acclimate to those lights. Sometimes corals will sit in my tank for 6 months, then suddenly explode with growth. Others wont grow much and ill move them around thinking something isnt right and probably just end up starting the process over.

Try geting some different colors of digita, capricornis, birds nest, green slimer(yongei), those are fast growers. I have noticed the yongei is a good indicator of water quality, polyps out and fluffy when its happy, retracted when I screw up.

How long has the tank had corals in it?

How long has it had Ca/Alk supplimented?

I guess it seems like there's not much coralline algae - and while that doesn't really `mean much' ... it suggests possible issues with Ca/Alk, stability, or having the tank steady/mature IMO.

I run a calcium reactor tank 10 months old!!
