cooking aptasia

Just curious to know if boiling LR is a cure all for aptasia. I'm about to buy some guys rocks but I'm afraid of aptasia.

Boiling LR will probably kill the aptasia, and everything else. You'll end up with dead rock. It's better to cure the LR in a separate container and to keep an eye out for them. If you see any, try a fresh water dip and a tooth brush to kill them and wash the from the rock.

no reason to buy live rock if you are going to kill everything on it, and that is what boiling would do to it. freshwater dip could work, but it will also affect the coralline algea in teh short term, but hat should recover no problem. you could also try aptasia killer or joes juice or inject a little boiling water over the aptasia itself when you see it. it will only kill what the boiling water touches rather than the whole rock.

or you could ust buy dead rock, dried fii rock to start with, and go from there. marcorocks.com sells some good dried rock, i really like it.

i have heard of using fireplace lighter to burn off aiptasia (after pulling rock out of tank of course) for a few seconds and then put back in tank......tried that about 36 hrs ago and they are not looking alive so far....didnt hurt anything else on rock yet.

I usually stir fry them, a few fresh veggies, a little teryaki, some ginger or basil...

I third the fry em with a butane lighter. Nothing like the smell of burning aptasia in the morning.

Oh ya.
Put the rocks in some tubs with a dim light overhead. The little buggers will crawl to the top of the rocks were you can get em easier.

My deal is that I already have a tank. I'm buying another tank that is coming with it's LR. So, basically, I already have mature LR. The LR that is coming I just don't trust the new LR, but I don't really need it. I can just kill the whole thing and leave it in the sump to repopulate and provide some buffer action.

I read that trying to burn or inject aptasia just cause them to spread more in the long run.
