To all who use pendant style lighting

I am looking into this kind of lighting. I was talking to my wife (a.k.a. boss) about it and the first thing she brought up, is it going to flood the room with light? I thought that it was a good point as this is in the living room. So what are some opinions on this from people who have this style lighting. The lights will hang over a 110g tall tank so they will hang pretty high.

I have a 250 watt Giesemann pendant hanging over a 54 gallon corner tank, and it casts a faint bluish glow (14K Phoenix bulb) but the room containing the tank remains dark with other lights turned off. It really depends on how high over the tank you suspend the fixture. Mine is about 9-10 inches from the water surface.
