I tried it and it wont drain fast enough. Am I doing something wrong?

I run a 1262 on my AGA 90 with the Megaflow overflow. It runs through the tanks return and another line "T`d" off that passes through my chiller and also back into tank. Tank has no problem keeping up with the flow and I actually have the return balled off just a little.
This is with the standard bulkhead size

Yes and No

The return from the pump is split into 2 lines with one straight through the tanks return pipe and the other half to the chiller and back into the tank through a Locline fitting.
The flow from the tank bulkhead to the sump in my case has a ball valve on it. I have it turned slightly off (restricting flow) since it causes the water level in overflow to "flush" when its wide open.
If you figure in my head pressure to the tank and then through the chiller I really dont have the full flow of the pump as its being hampered by some restrictions of the chiller and bends in pipe/tubing and head pressure loss.
This may keep my 1262 from having the overflow/keeping up condition with the bulkhead you are experiencing now that I think about it and have written it all down here......Sorry about that....

I've got a MAG Drive 9.5 on my 92 gallon corner tank with standard bulkhead and overflow (I believe this pump is rated higher GPH than the Eheim and that the rated overflow capability of my tank is the same as your 90 tank - 600 gph?)

Because of an old post on this site, I modified the overflow by widening the teeth slightly with a dremel (be careful since this is electric! I turned return pump off first to drain the level down some).

I run an eheim 1262 on an AGA 90.

The eheim is directly underneath the 3/4" bulkhead so there are no bends what so ever, I get the max flow that it is capable of.

My drain has two 90 degree elbows in it, slowing it down a bit.

That being said the one inch drain can more than handle the 3/4" return fed by the eheim.

Are you sure it can't keep up?

I had as much as a mag12 on AGA 65 which has the same overflow your 90 does.

FWIW I had a mag12 on my 72 gallon bowfront with a megaflow overflow. But really after having a few tanks I don't max out my overflows anymore.. You don't need much flow to skim your tank and keep your sump fed. Moving more water then that just makes more noise and increases your chance of flooding if you have any small block in your drain..

An Eheim 1262 is a powerful pump. Despite the ratings, it will flow a lot more than a Mag9, maybe more than a Mag12 depending on how its plumbed . Its too big for a 90G. A 1260 would have been a better match. Put a ball valve on the output and cut the flow back. If you can get a 1260 volute, it will convert the 1262 to a 1260.

I have a 1262 on my skimmer. It is a lot smaller than a 90 gallon tank. I think you will be fine. You may need a ball valve, but that is minor.
