I hate slugs (only have 3 hitchiker slugs now, dont know what they are), and some hermit crabs I still think are kinda cool. But, the crabs crawl all over the corals (dont know if their doing anything bad), and the slugs are just disgusting. are the slugs and crabs really necessary?

Slugs, don't know. Snails & crabs YES.

IMO yes as they eat left over food, and fish poo and eat alage building up into the tank which helps break things down in the nitrogen cycle and keeps your tank looking good. a good variety of snails does wonders

My tank is MUCH cleaner since increasing the number of snails.

IMO You dont need a cleanup crew. I never really had one. I ad a critter or 2 depending on need. I am not a fan of crabs at all. They like to crawl on coral and pick food from the polyps. A cleanup crew also creates waste as well. My engineer gobies keep the little bit of sand I have stirred and clean. most gobies will do this for ya. I do keep about 6 small snails in my 125.
