hi DFS,
for the 70W MH viper:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=15489&N=2004+113352

how much head room is required to mount it? my tank is half way inside a book shelf so there is only about 4" or 5" of open space above iit, so i wonder if the viper can be mounted that low. please let me know.

thanks!

Dzhuo,

The Viper HQI Clamp Lamp 70W has the following measurements:

Length of Extension Arms: 6-1/2”
Mounting Bracket Space: 1.25”
Length of Unit: 6-3/4”
Width of Unit: 6-1/4”

This fixture is meant to be attached to an aquarium with at least 12” of space above the fixture to ensure proper ventilation. Due to the measurements you have provided us, we would not recommend installing this on your aquarium kept inside a bookshelf. HQI and metal halide lamps produce a large amount of heat during operation which in small spaces is a safety concern.

We hope you find this information helpful.
