View Full Version : MagDrive rattle

I have a magdrive 9.5 that sat dry for a couple months while I was rebuilding my tank. Now that it's finally re-attached, it produces a pretty loud rattling sound that definitely wasn't there before. I checked to make sure it wasn't chattering against anything else in the sump, and it's definitely just producing the rattle internally.

I took it apart and noticed a tiny pit on the side of the impeller magnet. I don't know if this was there before, but would that be enough to throw it off balance and create a rattle?

Any ideas?

Possibly could throw it off, did you check for the piece of loose magnet?

New impeller for the 9.5 is $18 at http://www.marinedepot.com/md_viewItem.asp?idproduct=DN1727

also, are you throttling it back at all? They're notorious at making more noise if restricted

Take the impeller assembly out and soak it in vinegar overnight and reassemble it. Also soak the inside of the pump. you might have deposits of calcium in there.

Sounds like air trapped in it, or the rubber grommet at the shaft is gone.

I agree to run it in a bucket of hot water/vinegar overnight...
If its still noisy, note which model it is 9.5, 9.5a, or 9.5b

Get a new impeller, and a new impeller cover, the cover comes with a new o-ring gasket as well...

I just did this to my old 9.5b and its good as new, I bought a new pump as well and now have a back-up to swap out as needed...

No, it's not restricted at all. I'm using 3/4" hard pvc all the way up. It actually makes less noise when I start to close the ball valve on the union.

I'll definitely give this a shot. Thanks for the suggestion.
