View Full Version : Anyone Know Of A Nice Red Reef Fish

I don't want to roll the dice with a flame angel and I like my dusters & shrimp too much to put a flame hawk in there too.

Any ideas on a medium to small red (preferably bright red) reef safe fish for my 110 SPS?

I already have two tangs and I don't really like the wrasses.

Does such a fish exist?

Don't like the wrasses? Here's my male C. jordani Hawaiian flame wrasse...

How about some red stripe anthias? These guys have settled in very well and are diehard...

And if you like your shrimp I won't suggest a nice peppermint hogfish or a swissguard basslet...

I love the colors of wrasse's, but I don't like their body shape for some reason. I dunno what it is, they just don't appeal to my tastes.

A no go on the antheia's too, I already have three bartlett's in mine and one has 100% established his male territory.

Another +1 for a Wrasse. I didn't like their body shape until I got one into my tank, I wish I would have gotten one sooner. I don't know of many red reef fish though. Here's my Lubbocks fairy Wrasse, more pink than red though.

Hmmmm. I kinda like that one blazer.

Looks more red than pink to me, is the pic accurate? Was he pricey?

Yep, the pic is accurate. I guess the hue will depend on your monitor setup but he's more pink than red in person. Not spendy at all, I think he was like $30 or $35 from the LFS. I do think these are his juvi colors and he'll eventually change to blue, I'm not real sure though. Beautiful fish in the meantime!

A flame hawk is as red as red gets. Do you have shrimp?

He's almost always out in the open. He was shy for the first few days (I've only had 'em a week) but now he is always out in the open hanging out with my two-spot Tang wherever he goes. Eats anything I put in the water as well.

Hey Blazer that fairy looks like a C. Rubriventralis not a Lubbocks if your interested. I have 2 in my tank and they great looking fish especially when they flash.

That's interesting, I saw that multiple people identified ones that look just like mine as a Lubbocks Fairy Wrasse (in that long ID thread) in it's juvi colors. Do fairy wrasse's flash? Maybe I'll post a picture in the Wrasse thread and see what the masses say. Thanks for the comment, I'd love to figure out exactly what he is.

Agreed. Not sure what it is, but not Lubbock's. They are more multicolored.....more like a tye dye. Hence, I named mine Garcia.

You need to get your head checked if you don't like the wrasses :)

They are my second favorite group of fish behind the angels. But I have a reef tank so fairy's and flashers are my first choice.

The coral sea hooded fairy is beautiful as well. Another vote for wrasses.

Or the rosey scale fairy, carpenters flasher.

I totally agree with wrasseguy2 and CeeGee. Wrasses are the most beautiful and easy going reef fish.

:D Sorry guys, I know there are alot of wrasse lovers. I don't dislike them, in fact I love their colors. Some of them have a very unatural "looking" (obviously it is natural) body shape and swimming.

But I am really liking the red guy with a white belly.

Is there a consensious on his name and size?

My fish load is already on the high side in my 110.

4 chromis
2 clowns
3 bartlett anthias
1 hippo tang
1 yellow tang
1 starry blenny

SPS tank mostly small fish, I do have an ER skimmer, run carbon and phosban 24/7 and have good food rinsing and feeding husbandry.

Should be ok for one or two small red wrasse
:D

If you look at Bradleys second picture the fish on the left is a Social(C. Rubriventralis) and the do only get about 3" and are on the cheap side for fairy wrasses. And I think the fish to the far left looks like a Laboutei fairy wrasse they are also very attractive looking fish but is on the pricier side.

Did you consider a flame hawk - red fish, easy to keep and fantastic personality

Flame cardinals ... easy to keep and they do well in a group. Relatively inexpensive, too.
