HI guys,

I plan on setting up a 180 gallon sps. Instead of going with 2 tunze stream 6100's, what would be the best alternative for this kind of flow?

mj mod

I would recommend a closed loop system. Supply and returns through the tank bottom and/or back. Especially if you haven't ordered the tank yet? It is far better to go with a out of tank pump, and provide the high flow through a closed loop system keeping all power heads out of the tank.

If you want something sim to the Tunze you might try 2 or 3 of these Hydor Koralia 4 Circulation Pump/Powerheads, 1200 gph. There are a few threads on the here on RC and seems like most are satisified with them in general although they are considered the poor mans, tunze.

I plan to use a large external pump with a manifold for a lot of flow. The tank will be sps dominated. with this in place, I want to add more flow to the tank, but with the high price of the tunze, Im looking for the best alternative.

I just bought a used set of Tunzes with controller for my 210 after trying several different flow options. I am VERY happy with this setup and believe the cost is justified. I know its expensive, but for your SPS dominated 180 you could use 4 on a controller and it would be awesome and well worth it in energy savings and heat transfer. Where else could you get nearly 12000 GPH for 180 watts, and with the controller you can tailor different flow patterns to suit your needs.

I think it's should be tunzes are a alternative to a CL.. closed loop will cost you but you can do what ever you want with a CL system. I just ordered a Hydor Koralia for my 30g cube. can't wait to see how they do..

Hydor Koralias are probably the most cost efficient alternatives. They work great, i've had one for a while now in my 20L nano setup.

I've got 2 Koralia 3's on my 125 and they are doing fine. Can't beat the price.

2 Hydor # 4's across from eachother and a couple of mj's on the back
