View Full Version : Rubble rock for substrate in SPS tank?

Anyone here use rubble rock instead of sand on their SPS tanks? Just wanting to know the pros and cons of using rubble rock in my sps tank. Any info would help, Thanks.

I would think that to much detritus would settle in the rubble creating problems in the future.

Yeah, but you'd have the option the BB guys have: point your powerheads at the bottom, which would alleviate a lot of it.

i saw a tank on here once that was all rubble rock.

i dont remember who it was though

Same here. Interesting idea, decent aesthetic. If my DSB doesn't work out I'll go rubble, it's way better looking than starboard or BB.

This was mine before the bottom of the tank cracked. It worked fine.


Mine was done because I didn't like the look of the bare bottom with or without "Starboard" and I didn't want to worry about issues with the sand and too much water flow.

When time permits I'll be replacing that tank and doing a similar type of bottom treatment.

I've got friends that have done the same thing since and so far so good with them as well.
